I am a graduate student with Study Permit. I arrived in Canada in Sept. 2005. How long do I have to wait before I can apply for Immigration.
Thanks

Thank you for your reply.
I heard that one has to wait for 1 year before you can apply from here.
If you are sure I can apply right now I will start for application. But what about IELTS ? I have good score in TOEFL but I have not taken IELTS.

Hi Nep,
Before you start getting your application ready, make sure you go to the Citizenship website and see if you qualify to immigrate as a ´federal skilled worker´. There are several factors you must pass in order to qualify. There is an online self-assessment on the CIC website which will let you know whether you qualify or not. You should also know that it takes almost 2 years for you to get your PR, that is....is all of your papers are alright. Hope this helps. Since you have just arrived in Canada, I guess you might not know all the regulations yet. Read through the immigration website and make sure you know what you´re going to do after grad school, because you may have to go back to your country if you don´t have any sort of visa.

Hi Nep,

If you have been admitted into Canada for a period of more than 1 year you can apply for immigration right now. You will have to submit your application in Buffalo, USA.

TOEFL score is not acceptable. The will only consider IELTS or CELPIP score. Visit the link for more information:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/skilled/qual-3-1.html

What you can do is submit your application by writing an english proficiency letter. In the mean time start preparing for IELTS or CELPIP and submit the score as soon as you get it.

I guess it would be good to sent your toefl score. It can be count as supporting document for proficiency in English. I aplied 2 years ago and at the time I didn´t have IELTS but sent my TOEFL score along with other supporting documents and they didn´t ask me to take IELTS. You can try it. It doesn´t hurt anybody ):
Good luck

Thank you all for the suggestions.
I have a 2 year student permit.
I have completed my MSc in my home country.

I visisted the CIC website for point assement and got 67 (I was surprised!!) when I choose "Basic Proficiency" in all categories of English language. I think I can get hihger point in english as I have 377 in TOEFL. If required I can always take CELPIP test
