I am landing in February (family class). Do I have to show proof of funds and what happens if it is over $10,000?

Yes you need to show proof of funds at the landing port.
You have many choices:
1- To have a bank account in Canada at which the money is deposited before landing and you will then carry the bank statement that proofs that.
2 - Cash up to CAN$ 10,000
3- Travellers cheques
4 - Bank draft in your name
