OTTAWA (CP) - Immigration Minister Joe Volpe is announcing a $700 million program to clear the backlog of people waiting to get into Canada.

The announcement was made at precisely the same time Opposition parties began their effort to topple the Liberal government with a non-confidence motion. Volpe says his timing has nothing to do with the anticipated election because landed immigrants don´t vote.

The five-year program is all new money and will speed up the processing of more than 700,000 prospective immigrants who have to wait up to four years to have their applications dealt with.

Volpe says his department wants to attract skilled immigrants to fill job shortages, but also intends to convince many of the foreign students already studying in Canada to stay.

The minister said last month he hopes to take in as many as 300,000 immigrants a year within five years - an increase of between 50,000 and 75,000 a year from the current level.

And how does he plan to use this money to speed things up. Just by announcing more money means absolutely nothing. Does he plan on hiring more officers? Does he plan on re-vamping the procedures? et. etc.. What ever he does, if anything, we really won´t see any immediate changes in the near future with the processing times. These kinds of things take a lot of time to impliment.

So, whoop-tee-frigin´-dooo.

Guys i want to apply for the highly skilled visa program. Problem is i do not know how long it takes for to process such applications. I easy scored 68 in the online test and that was been modest about my qualifications.

However, i am really bothered about the time it takes and the factors to be considered as i know meeting the minimum requirement is not an automatic acceptance.

Please could i be assisted with information on this.

there is some pressure from the business community for CIC to get their act together. wrong applicants are arriving for the job vacancies. look for this issue to be addressed first. how, when, how long it will take is anyones guess. Until it happens and we see big CIC announcements on the website... continue as usual.

this is rubish, as the main problem is not lack of resources, its that there are far more applicants than Canada can accept, all visa offices reach their annual targets before the end of the year, so they are doing their job even faster than needed, unless Canada make a decision to accept more immigrants or refuse most of the pending cases (by increasing the passmark) their will be nothing called fast processing

the money is to be spent over 5 years starting in 2007... just to put it in perspective. Canada is at its intake limit. The bigger issue to be solved is getting the right immigrants for the countries needs. that is likely where the money will go.

not likely to affect anyone currently in the system.

but isn´t it nice to be in a country where you can have an election-period! isn´t it nice that we don´t know the outcome before we start. isn´t it nice that there is a country that welcomes people regardless of what religion or colour they are?

we are acting like spoiled little children.
