Subject: PR card or Travel document?
I am Canadian now living in Asia, and my wife has just gotten approval to be a Permanent resident of Canada. Situation is, we can´t live in Canada for couple of years (work stuff) but my wife needs to be in Canada before the PR expires in early January.
Is it worth the effort (a few weeks) and money ($50) to get the PR card application info all sorted out from all around the world (probably using courier services), or should we just get a ´travel document´ for the next time (after this holiday season trip) she goes to Canada, which probably won´t be until the end of 2006?
Also, I am worried that they might pull her application and demand an interview and we won´t be in the country for it.
As I can´t travel with my wife when she enters to keep the PR from expiring (she´s also carrying a baby with her), I was thinking it might be easier for her not to do anything more than she has to.
Thanks everyone.

Do you have any relatives of friends in Canada? You could use that address to have the PR card shipped to when she lands in Canada before the expiry date. CIC doesn´t really give you any alternatives, she needs to use the visa before it expires or else reapply all over again when it is more convieniant for you and her.

The PR card has to be sent to a canadian address.

If you wife already has PR they won´t pull it. I think that seeing as how she´ll need her PR card in the future, you may as well get it now to save having to bother later. Either way, it´s up to you as both solutions are feasible. Will the baby have the right visa/documents to be able to enter?

You wife must arrive in Canada before the time specified by the immigration officer usually before the medical expires to finalize her PR status.

If the PR visa expires you will have to re-apply.

She can come to Canada for a week and complete the landing process and have the PR cards sent to a friend or a family member in Canada.

She can have the PR card mailed to her to be used for reentry to Canada once you are ready to live here.

they CAN pull a PR card once it´s issued. It states that plain and clear on the CIC site. You must live in canada for 730 days out of 5 years (in other words, two full years) otherwise your status is terminated.

I am Canadian, and as it says on the CIC site, if we live together outside of Canada, and can prove it, that will count to her PR status. We don´t plan to be outside Canada for more than two years anyway. So, it´s a non-issue.
My son has dual citizenship, so it´s no probs for him.

However, getting all the material organised before she goes to Canada is an issue I am worried about. Unless they have a simpler procedure at the point of entry than what it says at the CIC site about applying for the PR card. Anyone know
Thank you everyone.
