  Hi all
My title in the contract is full time Research Assistant; however my duties come under Molecular Biologist (NOC 2121). Do I have to stick to the title in the contract? or I can write occupation according to my duties? your suggestions please.
Another question is regarding the "activity" column under personal history in background declaration form. Would it be enough to write my job title under "Activity" or I have to write what I have been doing during that period in detail. For example I worked as Resident in a hospital and my title was Resident Medical Officer. Would it be enough to write medical resident? I am submitting job contract and reference letters mentioning all details about my job. Please advice

Thank you in advance
Best regards

State what you can do. This is nothing to do with titles.

You will put the title as "Research Assistant", what you are officially listed as and paid for. It is going to be difficult to explain why you list your job title different than what you will produce document as.

Immigration agents are not specific enough to understand what Molecular Biologist is just by your duties.

However, when you apply for a job, you should list your title as Molecular Biologist (Research Assistant).

Hi Satrwar
Thanx for the reply.
My question is what should I write under the column, "occupation" together with NOC code. The problem is my job title is research assistant but my occupation is biologist. If I write my occupation as research assistant then what about NOC code? which code should I write? Code for research assistant or code for Biologist? MY duties doesnt match with research assistant. I am working on a cancer research project have published scientific articles, have been presenting my work in international conferences etc. Research assistant is just a technical job like doing experiments in the lab. I think there is a difference between duties of a research assistant in the USA and Europe.
As you know that title and occupation are two completely difference things. for example if someone is working as a general practioner his occupation woulld be medical doctor. correct me if I am wrong.

I would appreciate your suggestions

Regards

Hello again:
This is what I feel, you should be just fine writing the code for a molecular biologist. Here in the US a molecular biologist (MS) can be a research assistant to a Principle Investigator (PI) or a research associate with him/her in the same lab/institution. There are also classifications as assistant research scientist, professional research assistants, Sr. Research assistant all of who have advanced degrees and more duties. But at the same time there are RA´s who have a bachelors degree in biotechnology, microbiology or a relative field. It depends on your qualifications and duties.

When you send in your degree certificates and proof of the current enrollment in a PhD program, duties etc. Iam sure they wont confuse you as an ordinary RA or a lab assistant

Honestly, the CIC itself is not sure how to classify certain fields and duties. You will have to tell them and prove it with documents.

Thanx doughnuts,
This is what I thought. So I am going to write Biologist in occupation column and 2121 as code.

Another question is regarding the "activity" column under personal history in background declaration form. Should I write the title of my job or exaclty what I have been doing during that period. Working as a Research assitant or Biologist or simply working as a researcher?
Your suggestions please.

Thank you once again for your help

Alway use the title given to you by your employer. If a letter is sent to them or a reference is obtianed from them, it will use that title. There is no reason you could not add the NOC job code and title after it on a resume or background declaration.

Research assistant (NOC 2121, biologist)

I guess Anonymous is right, if a verification is done, that title could be used. This might create unnecessary hassles. ***.180.234.17 (Anony.) idea to add the NOC code looks like a good one.

Your post doctoral masters degree has already qualified you as a biologist and to top it off you are doing your PhD. Your intended occupation in Canada is as a Molecular Biologist and you hold the necessary degrees and experience for that.I see no reason why they(CIC) would change your NOC because of your job title.
