Subject: Driving in Canada.(licences?).
Hi, does anyone know if you are on a Visitor Visa in Canada how you can drive legally (more specifically, in Ontario). The Ministry of Transportation website, only says if you are a new resident you must change to an Ontario licence within 60 days. My fiance is coming on a visitor Visa for 6 months, and applying to extend it for another 6 months. In other words, he will not be a permanent resident and cannot get an Ontario Driver´s licence at all during that time.

Another question, in addition to the above, does anyone know of an insurance company in Ontario that will insure someone with an driver´s licence from the UK?

Thanks

Hi,

I am from the states and you are allowed to drive for 60 days after that if you´re here longer you will need to get an ontario license. it was rather simple for me.

All I had to do was pay $75, provide them with my current license, and driving record. (and a vision screening ofcourse) They basically want to see if you have 2 out of 3 current years of driving and a full license from your current home country to get a "G" (full) license. otherwise you may get G1 or G2 which is graduated and has restrictions... kinda like a learner type license.

Hope this helps!!

as far as the insurance question... i´m not sure. maybe you can be added to someone´s policy, but I would assume you would have to have an ontario license to do that.

cheers!

I had an International Driver´s License when I first moved to Canada, which was valid, if I recall right, for six months.

visitor, you can use your own country driver license, your vehicle insurance company will cover without problem! Make sure you have translation with you, in case your driver license is non-English

Not entirely true. Canada has a shortlist of countries whose licenses it accepts for short-term use by visitors (no time to check right now, though the US is obviously one of them).

For those whose licenses are not on that list, you need to get a separate international driver´s license from your home country.

I have already asked my insurance company which is RBC and they will NOT insure a driver with a licence from another country. He must first get an Ontario Licence

Ejspet - did you already have permanent residency status before you got the Ontario licence? My fiance will not have that yet. Can he still go in with what you did and get an Ontario Licence?

Thanks

I´m here on a visitor´s visa (US citizen). Got married Oct 1, got an Ontario license shortly afterwards (mid-Oct). Then my husband was able to put me on his insurance as a spouse.

I applied for PR just this month.

What ejspet said is what I did, too. Be sure to have proof of 3 year´s driving experience - be that the issue date on his current license or, in my case, I got a copy of my driving record from my state Dept of Motor Vehicles. It had the issue date showing as 3 years ago.

This is all for US drivers, though - I obviously don´t know about others.
