Subject: Advice on landing
  Hello friends,
I plan to land sometime in the first quarter next year.Need your help & advice on the following:
1.Landing: I plan to go by road.My question is - Is there an option of renting a car in US with a drop off option in Canada i. e one way from US to canada? Has any one done that? What are the pros & cons and cost factors?

2.Car: If I take my car from US to Canada - what is the cost involvement wrt import duties, taxes or any other changes to be made in the car ?

Your inputs would be greatly appreciated.

J

1. I think you can land using a rented car but sorry I really have no accurate info to share.

2. Please visit this website...it has every info you need to know if landing using your own car.

http://www.riv.ca/english/html/how_to_import.html

Also, please make sure to inform the US immigration at least 72 hours before your scheduled landing. This info can also be found on that website I just gave you.

Hi jack
one of my friends went to Canada in november, he rented a one way van, dumped all his belongings in it and dropped it(the van) in Toronto. Total cost US$180/24hrs + gas(from Chicago).
Sorry I forgot the rental company name but I will call him and find out.
Then one of his relatives took his car from the US to Canada. all you need is the title of your car and the car manufacturer recall clearance letter from the dealer, send the title to US border where you are going to cross from 48 hours before you go there and pay import fee to Canadians almost 200 dollars(dont know US or Canadian).
By the way my friend´s relative faxed the title but when they reached the border, US officials said they didn´t receive it and asked for the confirmation of the fax, nothing happened, then the canadians didnt even ask or looked at the clearance letter, on top of that they didnt ask for the import fee at the border. I think my friend will have to send it afterwards.
if you have any other concern, just ask.
c u tomorrow

I remember it was alamo.com
I think this is one of two companies that offer one-way vans and SUVs.
