I clearly states on your AOR letter on many places on the CIC website that they will NOT under any circumstances reply to email enquiries regarding the status of file. They will also not acknowledge the receipt of any updates to your file that you may have emailed, faxed, or mailed them.

Case-specific enquiries may now be sent by fax, mail or e-mail only. We no longer accept enquiries by telephone or in person at the Canadian High Commission.

They may have been caught up with things, CIC is fast about replying emails. I got my replies in 2-3 days max!

I think it depends on the office. I have sent email inquiries and received responses, but there is a disclaimer saying they only respond the email inquiries sent every 90 days.
