The CIC website Residency Obligations for Permanent Residents section states that Permanent residents comply with residency obligations if they accumulate two years of physical presence in Canada in every five-year period. If they are outside Canada for extended periods of time, they can accumulate residency days if they are:

*accompanying a Canadian spouse or common-law partner, or are a child accompanying a parent;
*employed on a full-time basis by a Canadian business or the Public Service of Canada; or
*the accompanying spouse, common-law partner or child of a permanent resident who is outside Canada and who is employed on a full-time basis by a Canadian business or the Public Service of Canada.

Other than exceptional circumstances, a citizenship applicant must have accumulated three years(1095 days) of physical presence in Canada in the four years preceding the date of application. In other words, an applicant can be absent from Canada for up to one year, within the four year period. These are the residency requirements for applying for Citizenship.

The purpose of the residence requirement for Citizenship is to ensure that an applicant for citizenship can become familiar with Canada and become integrated into Canadian society.

Hello,
I think that what stacy means (I don´t understand it either) is how that five year period is counted for. If, for example, I´ve only lived 2 months as PR in Canada, how long can I be abroad before losing my PR status?. I don´t see any five year period, or should it be counted as %, like 2/5= 40% and one should be 40% of the time in Canada?
Thanks

Please visit this link for a more detailed explanation:

5-year period....my understanding is this:

say you landed Feb 1, 2006...so from Feb 1, 2006 until Jan 31, 2011, you should have stayed/lived in Canada for 730 days or 2 years....more accurate idea is welcome :)

Hi joe,
But should this time be at the beginning or ending of the period of time?
