Subject: Background checks
  Hi everyone,
I was wondering if somebody could share their experience with the timeline on background checks. How long do they take? How come police certificates are not enough, especially if the immigration office requests fingerprints? To me, it is already a very thorough check.
Thanks so much for your feedback.

I feel dispair (in reply to: Background checks)
Hi, Waiting. I just received an email from buffalo that says my background check is still in process. The exact wording is the same as the one i received back in October last year (see below). I completed my medical in August 2004 and has been waiting since then. Today´s email from buffalo literally put me in dispair.

We have requested background information from other government
offices(s). Unfortunately, we cannot respond to requests for the
status
of your application before this information is received.***

Same situation with me if this makes you feel better (in reply to: Background checks)
hwsgeo:

I submitted everything in Feb 2005 and I got the same answer yesterday: background check still on-going like yours.

Hi Guys,

So they don´t even give you the timeline on when your application will be finalized? Approximately, at least?
Did you have to provide them with RCMP clearance? or police certificates from other countries?
I am sure everything will be fine. Be patient!

Waiting and Joe, Their first written response to my fax inquiry in June 2005 said they expected to receive an answer from the other government office(s) on background check result within 6 to 9 months. But don´t count on it as it is not reliable.

Waiting- RCMP is for applicants residing in Canada. I am in the US. But Yes, i provided them with police certificates from all countries i resided since 18 years old. My CAIPS even showed they received my submittals in October 2004 and initiated the background check process in Novermber 2004.

My medical has expired. I am praying they will graciously extend it as they do to others in similiar case.

Hwsgeo,

That´s unbelievable, that it is taking so long!!!
So, first they told you 6-9 months and then, they have been extanding this timeline? Did you inquire why it takes so long? I always thought that when CIC tells you some timeline, it is usually the truth.
If you don´t mind my asking, what country are you from?
Thanks

Waiting, their answers are never specific to your questions, at least in my case. NO, they won´t give you a reason as to why it has taken this long. I reckon 6 to 9 months is merely an estimate. Heaven knows it certainly can take well over 9 months. I am from China.

The Canadian government has every right to check the criminal history of the applicants. They also want to verify the police certificates you sent them are genuine. That is their right. Since there are so many applicants and that they cannot speed up the work done by the countries you resided in, it will take time. Perhaps you should complain about your own governments as well.

I hate to burst anyone´s bubble, but life is seldom fair.

Why would they want to verify the police certificates, if they themselves require originals? It just doesnt makes any sense.
For example, RCMP certificate takes 3-5 months to do - so they spend 3 months checking who the person is. And then they spend another 6-9 months screening that person. So, what is the point of the police certificates then? I mean, arent they just doing the double work?
