Subject: Detroit consulate - questions
  Hi everyone,

I have received letter that Detroit consulate will be processing my case from now on and that they will contact me in case an interview is needed.
Could you tell me the reasons why the cases were trasferred to Detroit (in the past), probability of interview being vaiwed, and how cooperative US consulte is since I will need US visa should CIC call me for interview in Detroit.

Also, I have heard that on their site it is possible to track case on a daily basis. Is this true?

My timeline: app Nov 2004
AOR Mar 2005
IELTS May 2005, all bands above 7.0

thank you

Peter

I´m in the same situation, same timelines, and asked the same question here over the weekend.

Joe was kind enough to inform me that an application transfer to the consulate generally means an interview is likely, which is the reason for the transfer. As a result, the process will take longer (6-12 months more?) He also indicated that such a transfer is nothing to be concerned about other than additional processing time.

Hey there you guys. Last year someone in this forum posted something saying that starting january 1st CIC Buffalo would begin distributing all its cases to all the CIC offices in the US, that´s Detroit, DC, NY City, LA. That would be done to reduce the time it takes for an application to be processed but nobody really could say that was true. So maybe, it is true and that´s why you are being transfered, but again, I haven´t heard anything about that but here.

This is the post I´m talking about:

Subject: VERY IMPORTANT TO ALL READDDDDDDDD
CICIP Members: (French Version Below)
As discussed in Toronto on Friday, here are the details of the changes to our US network for 2006.

In the past, Buffalo processed all waived-interview cases to
conclusion, and forwarded cases requiring interview to our offices in Seattle, Detroit, Los Angeles and New York. In order to make maximum use of our resources in the US visa office network, to ensure best possible service to clients and to clarify processing responsibilities, we are changing this
system.

From 1 January 2006, all US visa offices, including Buffalo, will
process a blend of routine and complex cases, conducting interviews and detailed investigations of their caseload as required.

For cases in all categories, all applications will be continue to be
filed initially in Buffalo. Buffalo will create electronic and paper files, and initiate background checks concerning security and criminality screening. Cases will be transferred to the processing office within a few weeks of receipt, by priority courier. As in the past, Buffalo will advise the applicant or their representative of the transfer.

For Federal cases, distribution will be evenly shared out amongst all the visa offices, including Buffalo, depending on the volume of cases received and resources available in each office, and, to the extent possible, to an office that will be geographically convenient to the applicant. The objective will be to maintain similar processing times at all US offices.

For Provincial Nominee cases, to provide provinces with a single point of contact, cases will be distributed as follows:

* All British Columbia and Alberta Provincial Nominees: Seattle
* All Saskatchewan and Manitoba Provincial Nominees: Los Angeles
* All Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New
Brunswick Provincial Nominees: New York

Good Luck to All!

Hi Peter,

The probability of inteview waiver at this point is low but not zero. The main reason why Buffalo transferred your file is because from their end they cannot justify an interview waiver...meaning they want you to attend a selection interview. Maybe some items from your case need to be clarified/verified etc. Selection interviews are not done in Buffalo so they need to transfer your files to the consulate who will do the selection interview...in your case it´s Detroit.

However, officers in Detroit might have a different view on your application or they might just ask for additional documents and then your interview could be waived.

I have no experience about getting US visa for interview purposes...hopefully you won´t have a problem with this. I suggest you start researching about this so that you won´t have a problem when that time comes.

Detroit´s website used to have a list of file numbers that you can check from time to time to see if you have been scheduled for interview or if your case is ready for visa issuance etc...sadly...they removed that feature.

If you want to get status update, you can email, fax or write them a letter. Here´s the link to Detroit´s information:

To add to Joe´s comments, I do remember a few months ago CIC announced that all aplications would be spread evenly for processing between the consulates to ease Buffalo workload, regardless of interview requirements. So I think Anon (Me) is correct. Application transfer to a consulate does not necesarily mean a selection interview is required, as would have almost certainly so indicated in the past.

Joe05,
Do you think it is smart to e-mail Detroit and ask if an interview will be required, or, it is better to wait until IA.
Should I order CAIPS now, when IA comes or not at all.
At which point can I expect info regarding interview (along with IA,before IA or later)?
Thanks
Peter

I don´t think Detroit is going to answer your query at this point. In their website (from the link I posted here), it is mentioned there that 18 months is the normal processing time for SW and that they won´t answer any status inquiry if processing is within this time frame. Your IA will tell you if your interview is waived or not.

CAIPS before IA is really not ideal. Just wait for your IA and from the post of anonymous, a waiver is still very possible....hoping your wait will be faster...good luck.
