Subject: New Government: follow up reply
In reply to the following post:

"It always amuses me how people who haven?t lived here, and don?t know or understand the logistics of the Canadian government can make predictions on what?s going to happen.
Take it from those who have lived here their whole lives, we know what we?re talking about."

This annoyed me enough to reply - and I only do so because its writer is probably not one of the "crazies" out there, but probably thinks of him/herself (and possibly also is) a relatively intelligent and helpful individual. However, it is the subtle, almost invisible biases out there that are often the most dangerous.

While I may not be an absolute relativist and agree that there are quite a few ignorants, or just plain idiots out there, the above view smacks of a certain sense of superiority, couched in terms of lived experience, where "those who have lived here their whole lives" have access to an insider, (and by insinuation a more authentic) viewpoint. While such "insider" viewpoints are certainly indispensable, alternative viewpoints from the "outside" can not be so readily dismissed - or at least, if they must be, they should be dismissed on grounds other than that of inauthenticity. Else you are in danger of subscribing to the view that one cannot empathise, analyse, or understand, from a different cultural, geographic etc etc position, which of course, stands in the way of dialogue.

I suspect the original poster was getting rather frustrated with endless, wild speculation about what would happen on the day after the election.

you do not need to be a life time resident to learn how our parliamentary system works. However... based on the comments being circulated, it was obvious that there was no thought or awareness as to how things work from a goverment perspective and perhaps no desire to. It was an exercised in pooled ignorance.

when several of us Canadian folks tried to settle everyone´s nerves... we were ignored. While that is absolutely fine... it is a little frustrating when the hysteria persists and nobody is remotely interested in understanding the truth of it all.

the post you are objecting to was the 3rd or 4th attempt at settling down the mass panic. If we sounded frustrated - it was because we were!

As one who is looking forward to receiving my PPR shortly, and I have worked for the US government for sixteen years, I have learned that hysteria will get you nowhere. I too at first became concern with the change in the government in Canada, but to calm myself I continued to research immigration from all perspectives as well as each position instead of just one side. Even with that, I like to hear from the folks who actually reside there and/or are citizens to get all perspectives. For me, all of this information begins to develop a common theme. When I resort to anger it can blind me from the information I really need.
