Subject: FBI fingerprint cards
the issue of FBI fingerprints is confusing to me. Is this for applicants living in the US? I did not see any request in the application documents or instructions. Please enlighten me if you can. My fiance has been to the US on 2 occassions and was fingerprinted on his last trip... does this fit into the immigration equation?

Sharon,
If your fiance was in the US for a period more than 6 months you must obtain a FBI clearance ( aka finger prints with a small stamp saying there are no criminal activity) It will take anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks if you are applying. You can get these finger prints taken in any police staion in a FBI finger print card or request a finger print card by writing to FBI in the following address.
US Department of Justice (FBI)
1000 Custer Hollow Road
Clarksburg
WV 26306
ATTN: S.C.U. Module D-2

Then have the prints taken by local police so that you get a clear print and send it back to the same address with a $18 money order fee. They will send you the same card back with a seal in the back saying no criminal activity.

Hope this helps

Sharon,

I think you are confusing the fingerprinting which is part of the VISIT program and the fingerpriting for the FBI criminal records. The VISIT program requires foreigners to provide fingerprints of the index fingers at the port of entry in the US, this happens heach time you enter the US for most foreigners. The FBI fingerprinting is used to obtain a criminal record, which is required by CIC for the PR application. So, they are completely different in purpose.

As the previous person mentioned, if the person you are sponsoring lived in the US for a period equal or greater to 6 months, then he(she) needs to obtain the FBI criminal record.

Good luck!

OK... help me make sure I have this right... the visitors fingerprint card is a different situation than the FBI clearances. FBI clearances only apply to those who have spent more than 6 months in the US or are applying for Canadian PR from a US location... in which case I can stop reading all the FBI postings and not worry about it :) How did I do????

I am nearing completion of my PNP application and have assistance from people in the BC work dept.

The issue with FBI is simply to prove to the Canadian Government that you have not criminal record. If you have documents to fill out and you know that a Police Record is required from the FBI, then find and fill out the cover letter "PC-1 (RCP)". This letter needs to be sent with your FBI fingerprint card to the FBI. Most fingerprinting agencies and police stations have the FBI fingerprint cards.

Most of you have questions that I can not answer but let me make a suggestion. Call the FBI and ask them yourself.

I encountered a problem as I live in Germany; So I called the FBI and they assured me that the downloadable fingerprint card was acceptable to apply for my own police certificate and that the local police forces in Germany ought to know how to properly fill in the fields.

I will not say that this applys to everyone but seriously, call the FBI and ask. If you have problems getting though then call a legal attache office in another country for example. Good Luck and dont forget to read the instructions thoroughly before you dive in.

P.S. Lawyers are NOT required! Time, Patience and a clear head however are required.

There is another issue that I neglected to mention...

Mr. Brodeur from the Immigrant Skilled Trades Employment Program who is assisting me with the PNP program said the following.

..."all information has been centralized and updated under the website www.servicecanada.gc.ca but there are other websites with outdated information that have not yet been removed from the internet".

This issue can and has been a source of confusion but take my work for it. Anything that you find on www.ServiceCanada.gc.ca is current. Anything else ought to be taken with a grain of salt.
