I can feel how desperate you are but my friend i think i have replied this before...I am also a student in US and i am telling you that i have seen my friend travelling on Expired visa but he wqas not on F-1 , he was on H-1......Travelling with expired visa on F-1 status is very risky but as i have told you in my previous messages that you should consult this with your international office or spend few bucks and consult an immigration lawyer....go to visapro.com and they offer a consultation for only $39.00 .....my dear this is a sensitive issue , get a solid answer which you can get either from INS officials, lawyers or your international office......Good Luck

i have a student visa also. we have two visas; one for entry to usa from wherever you apply for a student visa. some consulat give this entry visa for a lenght of one year or most of time for three mpntrhs just to let you enter the usa. from usa border{airport} for entering the bcis officer give a visa of say which is the white attached to you passport. the lenght of this visa is defined as direction of status{D/S}. AS LONG AS YOU RESPECT THE RULES AND POLICIE OF YOU ATTENDING SCHOOL YOU DO´NT HAVE ANY PROBLEM.
TO RESPOND TO YOUR QUESTION I WOULD SAY YOU CAN GO TO CANADA AND COME BACK. YOU DO´NT NEED TO APPLY FOR THE ENTRY. YOU NEED TO DO THAT DURING YOUR VAVATION. YOU NEED TO GET THE BACK OF YOUR i-20 signed by the international students advisor. However if you travel to canada and go to embassy of usa to apply for renewal you have to make sure you get it. othervise if they denied your application you can not return to usa. you can use your valid i-20 with the back signed without any entry visa. i am telling you that because planty of my friends did. please an appointement with you school internal to be more clear0
good luck
