Subject: Filipinos migrating to Canada
I´m just wondering if it´s true. A lot of Filipinos leave their country and bring with them their lifetime savings to move to Canada.
However, once they get there, either they spend years and years trying to find work or doing odd jobs. Like bank managers in the Philippines doing the dishes in Canada. I´m just worried. I mean I´m still here in the Philippines but I´m contemplating on migrating to Canada. I´m comfortable with my standards of living here at home... at present. But knowing the never ending peace and order situation, graft and corruption, political and economic crisis that my country is going through, I´m not really sure if my children would be able to have financial security in the future. I´m afraid of the possibility of becoming poor. So anyway, help me make up my mind! I own a small business here and my children go to one of the most exclusive schools in the country. I´m used to being a boss, not being bossed around...although I must say that I am emotionally strong and that I will probably be able to handle situations like this. I´d probably do ANYTHING just to more and to provide a stable financial security to my children. I just don´t want to end up mopping the floors, waiting on tables, being a nanny and the like. I really really want to be a Canadian Immigrant, but these fears can´t seem to get out of my head. So help me! What should I do? Please enlighten me. Should I stay or should I go? Is there hope for me?

Donna...immigrating to another country is someones´s very personal business.....so i dont think this forum is going to be any help in making up your mind for this important decision......Job market in Canada is bad, no doubt but it almost worst in other countries as well....so nobody but nobody can guarantee you a white collar job in Canada or in any other part of the world.....If you are living a happy life in Philippines then dont move to Canada or any where else because there is no doubt you will have to strat from scratch....if you have the abililty to handle un-certain conditions, if you dont have any problem in working on minimum wage for a certain period of time (who knows, how long) or may be you can get a very good job as soon as you recah canada......then you can apply.......otherwise.......i dont know what to say.......think over it and do as you feel appropriate......Good Luck

I am a prospective immigrant too, and the same thoughts have gone thru´ my mind.... everyone thinks abt these things, so don´t worry, here´s my 2 cents.

Since its a new place and new country etc, as Steve pointed out its hard to just say "you will be ok" or for that matter "you will not survive", the best course of action would be to immigrate and then check things out in person, I know you can hear stories from all your filipino friends abt how things are in Canada etc etc, but you will not know what you can do till you actually give it a shot, every individual is different, his/her adaptive skills and resilience are different. At the same time do not burn your bridge back to the Phillipines, just in case you realise that migrating was not a good idea. Also since you have a business back home, just think if you can keep it running in your absence, as it can be help you out a little, not just financially, but in case you decide to come back. I also advice you not to go with very high expectaions, just take it as it comes and try to make the best of it, the good thing abt giving your best is.... that you will never have any regrets.

Hi Donna,

There is a huge Filipino community in Canada. All of us rock the same boat as immigrants to Canada or to any other country in the world which encourages immigration. Each one of us have a different reason for migration. I came in the country 10 years ago with my whole family from Middle East. We had our good and bad days. We are happy that we made the decision of migrating to Canada then going back to out home country India. We have no regrets. End of it all you have to make your own decisions.

Yes, it depends on your priorities. I have a stable job in USA pays good salary, but I want to do something different or at least have an option to do so. My GC in USA will take another 3-4 years. Do I want to spend my prime 4 year at the same job or do I want to venture out and live to my true potential. I decided on the latter..and decided to apply if things go well I will be in Canada this year or early next year. Believe me many people with a comfortable life in US will not make a decision like mind..I did though.. it is all you want out of life and there is always uncertainty in future.. change is good... but we always fear it...

Hi Walter,

Good to know you migrated from middle east. I am an Indian working in the middle east, filed my papers through a consultant (spent about $3000). Now I am in two minds, in case if I get through whether to go to Canada or go back to India and better settle there.

Walter, I would like to know more information about canada from you, can you please give me your email address otherwise drop a mail to aravi64@yahoo.com.

Thanks & Regards - Rav

Hi Donna,

I am a Filipino myself. You have just received valuable inputs from the previous posters. It will really boil down to what your purpose is for wanting to leave the country...your children´s future. It is really scary to start from the bottom but make your children´s future as your motivation. If employment is not your cup of tea then you can try your hand in setting up a small business at first since you seem to be an experienced businesswoman. Philippines is a beautiful country but I agree with you that a lot of negative factors are keeping it from moving forward. Me and my wife still plan of retiring in the Philippines though :).

You might want to visit ´Pinoy 2 Canada´....this is a forum of Filipinos immigrating to Canada and those who are already in Canada...here is the link:

Pray for guidance :) good luck

It would probably be best to go on an extended vacation to Canada to speak with local people and evaluate the situation for yourself. As many posters have said, only you can decide if it is worth it.

The move will be trying financially and emotionally. You need to decide if the benefits will outweight the costs.

Good luck in your decision.

I´m in the middle of immigrating to Canada from Australia and I´ve had 2 job offers and I´m not even looking for work. I´m a Carpenter by trade and when I was visiting my wife over Xmas 2 different contractors asked me to come work for them when I return. Both job offers where around $35/h. But I guess its allot easier for another westerner from an English speaking country to find work. Plus I have a trade thats in demand. I worked in Canada for a few years back in the mid 90´s and I never had problems finding work. And at that time I was living in Regina and unemployment in the city was around 10%. So I guess it all comes down to your skin color. Sorry but its true!

hi donna. mabuhay.
im at the same situation as yours. im indonesian so our country situation is more less about the same (my sis in law was filipinos). I have 3 kids and been living in the US for 7 yrs. Recently, I choose not to live in my country, even my dad´s business needs my help as a younger generation of the family and Im the only one who has the same education and ability. The country situation at present is ok, lots of international style of schools for elementary with luxury facilities, better economy and higher standard of wage. But who knows what´s gonna happen in the couple of yrs? I am not saying that I personally don´t want to go back home ever, I love to be home with my entire family and friends. But telling the truth, my kids are better be raised here, with the better education environment. They´re more independent and more self confidence (most of indonesian family spoil their kids who´s always accompany with their "around the clock" nannies..its true). In here, they´re also more free to express their thoughts and befriends with teachers and parents.
I plan to immigrate to canada soon. Just like Brian, I just try the opportunity to get PR, either US or Canada, whichever faster. Both countries are about similar in way of life, have better opportunity for my children, eventhough I have to crawl everything all over again from the start. I believe that the harder we work, the more good opportunity we get.
If you are not ready to face the truth that you may be starting life with unwanted job in canada, don´t force yourself. Nobody can guarantee your own life except God.
Good Luck.

Hi donna,
I am a mother and I feel the same way too. However we could never be sure if this country is still good enough for our children: Would we still breath fresh air in Metro Manila? Will they be able get good choices when they graduate? Will our lifesavings here be, at least, still of equal value when we grow old? These are the questions I have asked myself before we have decided to plunge on migrating to CAN. Noone can tell us if well be good there, but atleast we can give our children good choices for their future.
God Bless you donna, I pray that you will havegood choices for your children!
