I live in Houston, Texas .. and is applying both for permanent residency in the U.S. and Canada ... we came here from Manila .. about 3-4 years ago .. .we wouldn´t have applied in Canada is the Greencard process in the U.S. is not backlogged, it´s has been 3 years now and we haven´t even gotten past the 1st stage ....
We applied in Canada about a year ago ... March 05 in Buffalo .. and as i have observed we might get the Initial assessment in the next few weeks/months... fingers-crossed .. :) ...
If you have a business in Manila .. have someone handle it first ... this will help you financially .... the show money´s main reason is this ... that you will be able to support you and your family for 6 months .... i´m not sure if it´s a written rule or what .. as far as jobs is concern .... it depends on what you´re degree is ... if you have a bachelor´s in Science ... or in medical field ... or in construction ... or Business and Economics ... you will find one for sure ... not the one that you want at first but eventually you will find one ... most major universities in Manila are accredited both in U.S. and Canada .. you can even have it translated into Canadian equivalent scores ..
Main difference between Manila and Canada ...... basic utilities and services ..... water is always there ... food is everywhere ... and medical especially emergencies ... are accomodating (it may vary in price ... but you still get treated first ... :-) )
We are also a well-to-do family in Manila ... we just decided to stay in the U.S. ... because of the prodding of our folks .... it´s more for a children now ... not us ... the things that are going on in Manila now will be worse 10 years from now ... (I read about the WOWOWEE incident ... terrible...) ...
At least now our kid who is american citizen by birth will have a choice later on in life .. without thinking about H1B´s, Greencards or Initial assessments ...
Word of advice ... apply as soon as possible i heard it´s taking more than 3 years now in Manila before they get approved ..
You can also try australia .... same as Canada .. only you stay on the right side of the road .. :-) ...

Don´t get me wrong Pokmi ... but the Philippines is actually a good place to visit ... especially for an english man .... beaches are the best .... shopping is also the best ....
If you want to feel more safe .. just get in contact with a travel agency ... or better if you know a local .... like a filipino office mate or someone to take you around ..
