Subject: Status of New Born baby of Landed Immigrants
We have a two tier question to ask from this forum:

Situation:
We are Landed Immigrants since five months (October 2005) and currently residing in Calgary-Alberta.

Questions:
1. What would be the status (immigrant/canadian citizen) of our baby who is born in Canada before we are eligible to apply for Citizenship (3 years)?

2. If the baby is born before the completion of stipulated time period fixed for obtaining Citizenship of Canada, does it have any positive effect on our status? E.g., would the duration for applying for citizenship of Canada can be reduced or would it remain as it is @ 3 years, irrespective of the fact that our baby is born in Canada.

Kindly let us have any other pertinent information that you would want to share with us in this regard.

Thank you!!

1) Baby is Canadian citizen.

2) The duration for applying for citizenship of Canada will remain as it is @ 3 years irrespective of the fact that your baby is born in Canada.

I think Canada practices Jus soli ... or the other one jus something ... Born in Canada .... that means Canadian Citizen ...

Your baby can also apply dual citizenship .... at a certain age ... 18 i think ... coz he/she is born of I am assuming Indian parents ... so if your kid turns out to be a good athlete he can choose to play for Canada or India ... in the olympics ... :-)

it used to be the same in Europe i.e born in a country it means citizen but they changed it country by country from the 80s onward, I think Ireland changed it just recently, would Canada change it? who knows.
