Subject: Common law partner
Can anyone please tell me what the Candian Embassy constitute as a common law partner, other than what they have specified on their website?

My boyfriend has been granted a permanent resident visa and this has been activated however he is currently in the UK. From the government website it would seem that the application process is shorter if you apply as the common law partner of a permanent resident. Is this ture? Also, if I apply as a common law partner what proof is required? We have been living together for over a year.

Thanks in advance for your help, it´s most appreciated.

Common law - you´ve been living together for a year.

He can sponsor you IF he is back in Canada. PRs cannot sponsor from abroad.

Proof - any: joint lease, bills in both names, wills, photos, letters from friends and family saying you´re together. Whatever you´ve got really.

Living together for a minimum of 12 month. you will need to provide evidence that you are in fact in a relationship (best is joint accounts financial codependency).

and indeed, PRs can only sponsor from within Canada.

E-mail me if you need any help

A marriage certificate can help as well. I don´t know how the CIC views having a girlfriend or boyfriend for over a year.

Well duh, a marriage certificate would mean they apply as spouse, not common law. It is the same process for both but the OP asked for proof of common law. Marriage cert. is obviously proof of marriage!

Thank you all for you replies - I´m now posed with a further question:

If I apply as a common law partner is my boyfriend infact sponsoring me? Can I not apply as a common law partner without my boyfriend having to sponsor me?

Again, thanks in advance.
