Subject: IA(LA) & IELTS & Help
  Hi, Guys,

I have been here for a while. The posts here really helped me a lot.
It is finally my turn to get IA. Does anyone know something about
background check after IA? What does this check investigate? Will
they call the phone number on the reference letter about the working
experience?

Here is the timeline and some information about IELTS. Hope it is
helpful.

1. Applied around 12/20/2004
2. AOR around 3/20/2005
3. Transferred to LA around 1/20/2006
4. IA (interview waived) around 2/15/2006
5. One of my friends also got the IA from LA. Almost same timeline as
me.

I have some information about IELTS to share with you guys. My friend
who has simliar timeline was asked to submit IELTS at the end of last
June. He then hired a lawyer (www.maple-immigration.com). The lawyer
told him that his advisor´s reference letter was not helpful to prove
his English Proficiency because the advisor is a Chinese. Then he got
a letter from an American who has some relationship with his research.
It seemed OK for him, becasue he got his IA!
For me, I have 3 things to prove English proficiency.
1. My Statement
2. Letter from my advisor (He is american)
3. I have passed an interview test of spoken English for the teaching
assistants at our university. I have a letter from the University
for the test.
No IELTS requested yet. With 16 points of English Proficiency, I only
got 68 or 70. I don´t know how they counted my working experience. I
only have one year full time working experience in China and 4 or 5
year TA/RA at university in US. So, if you get the IELTS request, you
still have chance to argue with them.

Good luck to everybody and cheer up.
