Subject: Proof of French speaking ability!
I achieved a D grade at French GCSE after studying French for five years (secondary level exam -UK). However, this qualification was obtained almost 10 years ago. To get 2 extra points on my application I would like to claim basic knowledge of writing and reading. However, my only concern is that despite this qualification and five years studying French, the application reviewer may deem the time lapsed as making this void. Am I reading to much into this as afterall I am only claiming a basic knowldege after all? Any advice would be gratefully received.

In my case, I included a brief note detailing how much time I spent studying French and claiming intermediate knowledge. I was still asked to take the TEF (and IELTS) when I got my IA.

You have to take the TEF for proof of French. D grade at GCSE is really nothing (no offence) and as they don´t know what standard this is, the TEF is the only way they can normalise things. It´s quite hard so make sure you brush up on it unless you don´t want to take it and don´t claim French points.

Hi Stephen, claim basic knowledge.

Can you obtain any letter explaining when and where were you attending those courses? If yes - do that and include that to your app package.

Goodluck
