Subject: Work permit for spouse?!?!
  Hi All,

I´m currently a work permit holder and have a permanent job in Toronto. Is it possible if my wife come here and get a work permit as well?

I heard that a student with a spouse can have an open work permit. What if it´s an international worker with a spouse?

Any comment is greatly appreciated.

thanks,
-sammy-

I´m in Canada on a work permit, and my husband got an "open" spousal permit without any problem. You´ll likely have to go to the border, though.

I also needed to get a letter from my employer that I would probably be employed for 3 years so that husband could be OHIP eligible.

Hi Cannuck Wannabee,

Thanks for the comment/answer. Care to tell me the details of the process? I need to know further more.

Did your husband get the work permit when he´s in Canada or outside of Canada? Is a job offer / job offer letter necessary before my wife comes her and apply for the work permit?

When your husband filed the application, was he the principal applicant, or was it you?

thanks in advance!

Dotan may be right - you may be able to apply to Vegreville. If so, I´m of no help :(

Our situation was a bit odd; we´d both been in Canada, lost our jobs (we were both under NAFTA), I got another NAFTA-eligible job fairly quickly, but he didn´t - so off to the border we went. I applied for my NAFTA permit at the border, and we got his at the same time. (We had to go to the border because my former work permit had expired, so couldn´t renew through Vegreville.)

He did NOT need a job offer - that´s why it´s an "open" permit. I, of course, needed an offer to obtain my permit.

As I said, we did both mine and his at the same time at the border.

As far as applicants for SW, I´m the principal applicant - I had a point or two more than he.

Hello guys (in reply to: Work permit for spouse?!?!)
Just to add something to what you already posted

Spousal Program
Your spouse (husband, wife or common-law partner) may qualify for a work permit without the need for a job confirmation from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC).

Before your spouse can apply for a work permit without an HRSDC confirmation, you must meet two requirements:

You must be authorized to work in Canada for six months or longer.
The work you are doing must meet a minimum skill level (usually work that would require at least a college diploma). Specifically, your job must be listed in Skill Level O, A or B in the National Occupational Classification.
If you meet these two requirements, your spouse may apply for a work permit that is ?open? and that will allow them to accept any job depending on whether or not a medical exam was done.

Your spouse?s permit will be valid for the same period as your authorization to work in Canada.

Can you apply for an open work permit along with your spouse´s work permit( with a valid job offer) or do you have to wait untill your spouse gets his/her work permit??

Re: Open Work Permit (in reply to: Work permit for spouse?!?!)
My husband is a s/w professional. We both r going to canadian consulate this week. I wish to get a "open work permit". His company is taking care of his visa. Can i get the open work permit at the same time or after arriving to canada i have to apply for it. My husbands project is for 2 years.

Whether Quebec has any seperate procedure for applying "open work permit"?

Thanks in advance for the reply.
