Subject: open work permit / study permit for spouse

Hello all!

These may sound silly questions to some but please bear with me! My spouse just received an Approval in Principle and we´re waiting for the security checks to go through. We applied within the ´in-canada spouse sponsorship´ category. In the meantime, it seems my spouse can obtain an ´open work permit´ or a ´student permit´. I have a few questions about these...

a) I presume the ´open work permit´ is... well, open? We don´t need to specify an employer or a specific area of employment? Does this provide my spouse a social security number? Can my spouse open a bank account even if he´s not a resident yet?

b) As for the study permit it seems we need to get a letter from the registrar of the desired institution first. Does anybody know if the various Immersion centers in Quebec cooperate with this or should we look strictly towards private academies/institutions? His mother tongue is spanish, and although he understands and speaks some french, he would definitely benefit from significant schooling in French and/or English.

c) Can he ask for BOTH the work permit and the study permit?

d) Assuming he obtains either or both, do we still need to renew his tourists´ visa until the moment his permanent residency arrives, every six months?

e) Just curious : anyone knows of a recent case story involving a security background check for a Spanish citizen who´d only previously lived in Spain, particularly of the expected delay for the clearance?

Thanks!!

aAs soon as I know with an open work permit you have temporary resident status and can open account, and have SIN. But it not so easy to obtain. Better to try student permit with the same options. You can try to ask both but you deffinitely will recieve just one.
At the same day she recives Student or work permit new temporary resident visa will be issued. It will be visa for the concrete amount of time (usually the expiry date of student/work permit) and will need to be renewed before 30 days of the expiry date not if new immigrant (permanent resident) visa arrives first.

You can open a bank account regardless of status here, I´ve opened a chequing account with TD Canada Trust and I´m only a visitor for 6 months.

That´s interesting, all the banks I´ve contacted (RBC, TD, BMO and even Desjardins) refused to open an account without a social insurance number and all explicitely said they have a policy against opening accounts for tourists/visitors. In which province did you open this account?

Thanks!

PS: I just checked the online TD site and it also says that applicants must be canadian residents...

I have cheque books, bank cards and facilities to online banking, I swapped my UK licence for an Ontario Drivers licence and have rented a house for the 6 months I´m on holiday. I have no SIN No and had no credit history, yet was able to do all this.
