Subject: info on sponsorship
  Hello all,

I am a Canadian citizen and I would like to sponsor a cousin of mine, who is over 18 and an orphan. I look at CIC site but am a little confused with the description of whom I can sponsor.

Can anyone clarify this for me? Financially, I am able to guarantee her for 10 years.

Any reply is greatly appreciated and thank you.

Hi there: Was just reviewing the following 2 points

1. brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces or grandchildren who are orphans; under the age of 18 and not married or in a common-law relationship;

2. you may also sponsor one relative of any age if you do not have an aunt, uncle or family member from the list above who you could sponsor or who is already a Canadian citizen, Indian or permanent resident

I guess with regards to #1 she is your cousin and therefore she cannot be sponsored unless she has grandparents here or an uncle/aunt

With regards to #2 if you have immediate family here in Canada, you cannot sponsor her either. Therefore in all likelihood will not be able to sponsor her yourself.

Like I mentioned earlier, she can be sponsored if she has an aunt, uncle or grandparents who are permanent residents of Canada.

I am not an expert so I could be wrong. This is just a logical deduction on my part. Good luck!

It depends because in certain cultures cousins can mean different things. Go to www.cic.gc.ca click on Policy and Regulations then go to the Manuals and overseas processing Check out OP2 I believe OP2 guidline 5.24 might help depending on your situation.
