We are thinking of immigrating to Canada and need a few Q´s answered, firstly - how much of your employment history do they check, reason being 2 or 3 places I´ve worked in past have now closed down, will they know this by checking or will I still have to provide the proof? I also have have the required funds, but have just under 2 thousand pounds between my credit cards. Should I clear this amount before sending in application? and lastly my wife was hospitalised 7 yrs ago for depression for 6 weeks, will this go against her?...she is fighting fit and in very good health these days. Thanks for help guys?!!

background check procedures are actually designed NOT to be unknown to the public

ur question imlies u may want to hide something - Don´t.
boloxis: your answer, while it can be understood, is awfully put and I think it is wrong.

background checks has nothing to do with work history. it has to do with terrorism, crimes aganst humanity and other seriouse crimes around teh world.

Sorry, I said it wrong, its supposed to be --Background check procedures are specifically designed to be unknown to the public. I also don´t know the exact procedure how they do background checks, I asked my lawyers that same question because my work experience include 2 companies but I have been assigned in 9 different countries. They gave me that same answer thrice. The public is not supposed to know, so nobody really knows how it is done. If everybody knows how it is done, it would be easy to infiltrate its credibility.

Security check (SDEC/SEC) is just one leg of the background checks that investigates if you have any affiliation in espionage or terrorism. Criminality checks (CDEC/CRIM) your history of police issues, they´ll even know how many parking tickets you had. OREQ (other requirements) includes all other verification of docs you gave, like educ and work. Its a part of background checks.

PG - as per rule, you have to provide employment letters from all the past jobs you had in the last 10 years. If you cannot, you must provide a "Letter of Explanation". Some tax papers or pay stubs or past work IDs will be of great help here. Just be as precise about all the information and honest, you´ll be fine.

Not sure if they check credit cards, but they also do financial checks. Somebody I know borrowed big money and put it in a bank, got a statement of balance and maintained that balanced but the Visa office still knew he just borrowed that money, he was asked for an interview and he was refused since he cannot demonstrate where he got the money.

No need to inform them about your wife´s hospitalization because it does not demonstrate that it "would put strain on the economy" or would currently "deem her physically unfit to work".

1) Employment check is for jobs worked during the last 10 years only.

2) I wouldn´t worry about your wife medical history and there´s no need to mention that either.

3) Proof of financial status is necessary only towards the end of the processing. And that may be a few years down the line..

Thanks again for all your help - I had a rummage around in an old file box today from the attic and have come up with some old payslips from previous jobs now out of business, that is a help and also have decided to pay off credit card balances, we still have more than enough money as we sold our house last year and lived in Canada for 6 month before deciding it was what we wanted. Sorry to dissapoint
WTF I really have nothing to hide - it was just some normal Q´s I needed answered.
