hi..
I did the exam recently..it consists of four sections,reading,listening,writing and speaking.
you have to score average of at least 6.5 ( total mark )provided that two of the four sections must be at least 7.
in this way, ur english language proficiency cinsidered high.
also it depends on ur total points, if you have a close ralative & arranged employement, average english language will be ok then.
Note: IELTS cannot be repeated before 3 months in case your aren´t satisfied with your results.

Hi. I took the exam in February 2003.
Here in my country the exam is administered by a company where British ladies are the teachers and run courses every month to prepare candidates for the exam. I still remember her advice clearly in my mind: "DO STUDY FOR IT. A lot of people with good English skills don´t get a seven." I bought a book published by Cambridge University Press titled IELTS for $US 22. It really paid off. Be prepared for the particular format of this test. Even though I´m an avid reader, I scored only 6.5 in the reading section. The format of the answers for this section was particulary confusing and made it harder for me to score any higher.
Thank God I did very well in the remaining sections.
Take into account that the speaking section is administered separately from the other sections. I was interviewed by the teacher on some topic and recorded live. You receive a score on the spot, but the tape is sent to another person who reviews it and may adjust the score for that section.

Hi...
I took the IELTS examinations almost a year ago...My precedessors here told you the truth...Prepare thoroughly....
Your main enemy is time...Especially in writing part...There´s only an hour to write 2 compositions, short, but...You have to show that you are familiar with the necessary vocab and at least basic grammar structures...
I got 8,5 in reading part, but I´m not sure whether I was so good in reading (really dubious...) or the reading was so easy...Try some Cambridge CAE tests...They should give you the background for IELTS reading...But remember...IELTS focus on skimming the text content rather than sophisticated vocabulary...However, without proper and accurate understanding skimming may turn out to be difficult and time-consuming...
Listening....Relatively easy...(7,5)But unlike FCE or CAE you listen to every part only ONCE...Try to find sth in Internet...I remember there was a site with listenings...An Indian one....But I can´t give you the link..
Speaking - like lottery...Somepeople pleased after this part, some disappointed...Much depends on the examiner....
