Subject: HELP:: What's recommended in this situation
  Hi all,

I am new to this forum and, really, to this area of immigration.
If you could shed any light on our situation we´d greatly appreciate it.

I´m Canadian, as is my family. I have the education and work background that I believe is what Immigration likes to see (degree, work experience, etc).

My girlfriend, who I´ve been with for 6+ years, is Japanese.
We´re both living together, as we have been for a while, presently in Japan.

Well, I just spoke to my sister on the phone and she pounded my head with information that got me a bit worried...here´s why...

In about 1 to 1.5 years from now, May 10, 2006, my girlfriend and I are seriously thinking to go back to Canada.

She currently scores over the 65 or whatever it is Immigration´s test (on their website) requires -- so that feels good.

But, I don´t know how to go about having both of us live together back in Canada smoothly.

I thought, what about her entering on a Working Holiday Visa, which Japan is valid for (and she´s still under 30, the limit), that would give her one year to get started, find a job, see how we feel, etc.

Of course, we´d live together in Canada. Now, you might be wondering about marriage...

We´ll the truth is...it may happen, but I´d prefer to have that ´feeling´ come naturally and then decide. What I´m trying to say is I don´t feel great about getting married for a Visa. I´m not saying it´s wrong, just my personal feeling.

So question 1: is it possible for her to enter on a WH visa for one year and then apply for a Work Visa when she finds a job while in Canada? or will she have to go out of the country to do that?

Question 2: If she came in on a WH visa, and we did decide to get married, how would that process work, does she need to leave the country, etc?

Frightening it is, to hear that people have to wait sometimes almost a year to get their work permit. I´ll work my ass off to support her, but 12 months of support isn´t easy. What are the options?

If this email is going off on tangents, my apologies. It is a while away I know, but I want things to go smoothly. I´ve done the long distance relationship thing more many years -- and we´re both sure we´d like to avoid doing it again.

I appreciate your time in reading this and thank you in advance for any insights and suggestions!

Raymond

Options (in reply to: HELP:: What's recommended in this situation)
If you have not asked her to marry you in six plus years why would anyone believe that you would ever say the four most scary words a man has to say? Will you marry me?

Any company with HRSDC approval can hire a foreign worker. Nobody waits a year to get a work permit. If a couple applies Inland Spousal Sponsorship the current processing time is 7 months for stage one approval and then around another year and a half for PR card.

Raymond, to answer your 2nd question - she will not have to leave the country as you are able to apply for Inland Spousal Sponsorship

Roy and Anonymous thank you both for your replies.
Much appreciated.

To clarify question one, if she enters Canada on a 1 year Working Holiday Visa and then, let´s say, in her 8-9th month she finds a job that is willing to ´sponsor´ her she won´t have to leave the country to get that work permit/visa?

For example, she would in the above case have about 3-4 months remaining on her visa, and if, again as an example, it took longer than 3-4 months to get the work visa, is she allowed to stay in the country while it is processing? ie, her WH visa is finished and she has applied and is waiting for the Work permit/visa to be approved.

Thank you.
Raymond
