Subject: Can I start the visa process in USA if I'm Vnzlan?
  Hi every body

I am Venezuelan, and I am doing a Master in the USA. I want to apply for a Canadian visa but I am really confused. I need to return to my country in one year because my visa will expire. I don?t know if it is a good idea to start the procedure now or when I return to my country (I don?t like this Idea).
Also I have a question:
Can I start the process from the USA or I need to return or send to my country the documents and make all the process from there? If the answer is yes to start in the USA, is it a good idea to start the processes in the USA?
Help is really appreciated.

Just a suggestion - Apply right now from Caracas, Venezuela. If you check the processing time for a skilled worker in Caracas and Buffalo(USA) you will understand why I am saying this:

------------------Caracas-----------Buffalo
30% of cases -------- 6 ------------- 19 (Months)
50% of cases -------- 12------------- 22
70% of cases -------- 23------------- 25
80% of cases -------- 26------------- 28
Data taken from : http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/times-int/2003-Q3/02-skilled.html
(This data should be used just to get a general idea. There is no guarantee that your application will be processed in these times)

As you can see the processing time is faster in Venez. than USA.

If called for interview you will have to come to USA. It will be your responsibility to get a visa.

erwin,

according to rule r11(1) of the immigration and refugee protection act, you may file your application either at your country of origin or at the country where you have been legally admitted for at least one year. so, if this situation applies to you, you should be able to sumbit your application in buffalo, new york. i think the current average processing time in buffalo is about 9 to 10 months right now.

also, if you´re on an f-1 u.s. visa status, u should be able to get one year optional practical training (opt) after completing your studies. however, u should apply for the opt before u finish your program. please speak with your school´s international student advisor about this as soon as possible. buenas suerte, amigo.
