Subject: Landing and PR Card
After landing, how long do you have to stay in Canada? I would like to return to U.S. to sell residence and finish everything there, for maybe up to a year.

But I have no idea what the landing requirements are in remaining in Canada and getting the PR card. Do I need to remain in Canada after landing until I receive the PR card in the mail there, then return to the U.S.? If so, ho long must I remain in Canada - 3 months or until the card is received?

Please advise. Thanks much.

Normally you should receive your card within 4-6 months and it is a good idea to depart canada after you get it otherwise you will not be able to reenter canada and will require separate documentation. If you have a friend in canda, this can help , give his address for PR card, and then you don´t have to wait to get back to US; he can courier you the same to your US address once he gets it.

Thanks Brian. Curious that the CIC website indicates cards should be recieved within 30 days (as follows):

New Immigrants

Newly arriving permanent residents automatically receive a PR card as part of the immigration process.

If you are a new permanent resident who did not provide a mailing address to the Canada Border Services Agency at the point of entry, please do so as soon as possible.

You may provide this information on-line, or you may contact the PR Card Call Centre. Please note that if we do not receive your address within 180 days of your entry into Canada, you will need to re-apply for your PR card and pay the applicable fee.

If you do not receive your PR card within 30 days of submitting your address, please contact the PR Card Call Centre.

Richard - I read somewhere in the forum the suggestion that if you are a US citizen you just use your passport to go back and forth; you don´t need any other documentation, just like in a normal visit from the US to Canada. I think you just have to land, get stamped, then go back and forth whenever you want using the US passport. In regard to getting the PR card, I´ve read where people get a post office address for that purpose, etc. I have a real estate agent in Canada I´ve done business with and inn keepers where I´ve stayed where I could probably leave a forwarding address, so maybe you can think of something like that for receipt of your PR card. Good luck.

Yes, thanks Bob. What you recommend is how I envisioned this too but was not quite sure. It comes down to using U.S. passport vs. PR card at time of crossing back and forth. Also, providing a friend´s addess in Canada at time of landing to receive PR card would be fine I´ve read.

Yes, Richard. I don´t think they care what address you use so long as it´s in Canada.
