Hastings has some very ´unpleasant´ areas. I would not recommend it at all. If you can avoid the downtown, I would. rather, look at something along a transit route.
that said, where to recommend... I really don´t know and I live in Vancouver. If I think of a link that might be able to help you, I will come back with it.
