Subject: status in canada - please helpp
I went to university in Canada and now I´m working in Canada since September 2005. I applied for PR in May 2006. I have a full-time offer from my employer but my status in the company is contract/temporary so I don´t get benefits. They´re telling me they can´t put me in full time employee status until I get my PR. Is this true??? Are there any regulations/laws about this?

Please help I can´t find any information on this anywhere! Thank you

Hi Maria,
as long as you are on a work permit I can´t think of any reason for you not to get the employee´s benefits (health, dental and that kind of thing), some employers state the 3 months period before the benefits start, but other than that you are entitled to them. Somebody else has an opinion??

Looks like if times are alike, on WP since Sep05 and applied in May06 as well, submitted to Mexico City, how about you?

Sorry not to to be more helpfull. Good luck.
Javier

exactly, depeneds on your employer though,
My job is unionlzied. So after I work one month, full benefit, extend medical, dental, RRSP, company stock option, pension, life insurance.
You better check with your employer.
Sometimes they are just being cheap that do not wanna give you benefit.

Come on, they can get tax credit from benefit too

Yes if you are full time employee it does not matter if you are on work permit or Canadian citizen, HR policies are same for all, yes you might not be able for vacation pay, extra bonus etc for some reasons but all other benefits are OK
Now some employers don´t give dental etc but they also don´t deduct these charges from salary if you are not getting benefits, hope this is helpful for you

Thanks a lot, i think i´m going to talk to my employer about this. It looks like there is no canadian regulation that says I have to be on contract. Thanks!
