Subject: political refugee status
I am an American liberal and I am in serious fear of repression and of involuntary military service. What are the chances of gaining refugee status on these grounds? I plan on moving to Vancouver for film school, but I do not wish to return to my home country once my studies are completed. Any responses would be helpful.

Just some information for you. A link of the website is provided at the end.

" In December 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada´s minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class
lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter.

Once they get their grubby hands on you, YOU WILL NOT BE LET OUT!! Their "stop loss" policy will see to that!

Draft "avoidance" is lawful but "evasion" is illegal! "

Matt how about quietly vanish to Arjentina? Or Thailand? I would suggest if you are serious, begin accumulating wealth. It could be useful to lie low if things come to that. But it will be tremendous amount of noise before draft is re-instated. On the other hand, you can seriously pursue Canadian residency right now when the skies are clear and will be a nice position to avoid draft legally.
