Subject: 75 points!
Hey all, i just did the online self-assessment test from CIC and i got 75 points. I was thrilled, but,i saw the site saying something about having about CAN$12,000 for me and my wife to get to live in Canada. or if not, having a job offer from a canadian employer in order to get Skilled worker visa. I am a Computer Tech. and have 5 yrs working experience, but, i don´t have 12,000.00 Canadian dollars, and i don´t have any job offers from Canadian employers, do you guys think that i should still go ahead with the application process? I really want to do it, but, i don´t want to waste my money to apply for something that i won´t get through with. What Chance do you think i have? Should i apply for the Skilled WOrker visa? or should i apply for a work permit? Please help.

You should go ahead and try as you have an excellent chance. There´s much discretion given by immigration officers either way on things like personal funds. Your skills are excellent and that´s primarily what Canada wants - professionsals who can contribute to the economy.

I would question, though, why you have not managed to save. These days $12,000CAN is not all that much money to have at hand in some account. You apparently don´t even have an emergency fund in case of job loss or catastrophic event. Without trying to be too judgemental, this is a bit irresponsible unless you´re under some unusual finacial stress or burden. As Suze Orman would say, you should get that financial house in order.

you need to show proof of funs before they will even give you a file number. points are great but you have to support yourself once you arrive and as many folks around here would suggest - finding a job does not always happen over night.

I would see if you can save some cash/ or get that job offer before you apply.

(my guy got his application returned for lack of funds so I know it happens)

Well the fund requirement is one of the criteria - while it is an important one, you have almost 3 years to show the necessary funds (I assume it takes about 3 years to process you application).

You may be lucky and get a job in meantime.

You should go ahead and apply if you are eligible - you never know laws may change later and you will regret not doing it.

Think of a better life and future for you and your family.

my guy was given 90 days to show funds before he was even issued AOR. Otherwise the application was dead.

any consultant I have talked with laughed when I said he had applied with no money. (he is sitting on 82 points)

You need to have the funds when you send your application. They will return it to you it not.

since we applied, we have been asked to resubmit 3 months of bank statements 2 different times. we are still waiting for medicals.

depending on the home country - it is no secret to CIC that it is hard to raise the settlement requirements. It is also no secret that all manner of loans, or ´show money´ takes place for that magic first bank statement that must be shown to CIC to begin an application. Therefore, particularly in countries where $12,000 is a lot of money - there is more scrutiny on verification required that those funds are sitting in an account waiting to be used.

Some families might extend long term loans - but that money must be formally unencumbered.

Those funds are important to the success of any applicant once in Canada. They are the difference between a place to sleep and living on the street in the cold.

Now 67 points... (in reply to: 75 points!)
Actually, in reply to the whole 75 points thing - its now only 67 points to pass.

Changing the subject slightly - I have 82 points, applied over a year ago with no money but I did have arranged employment, hence me being able to apply. However, the job ended last Christmas. I managed to find another one but have not yet informed immigration as my work permit stipulated I had to work for the employer stated on my permit only. Any suggestions? I am also STILL waiting after 14 months and have not heard a thing except getting the file number.....

I think the purpose of discussing points was to clarify that all the points in the world do not substitute for arranged employment or settlement funds.

I really do not know the ins and outs of a change in arranged employment. I will be curious what the answer is as I am sure it is relevant to many.

Thanks Sharon, at present am sitting tight and doing nothing. My previous employer is a friend of mine and my mail still goes to her address. My only hassle will be if my current permit expires before my PR comes through as I probably can´t renew the permit without going through the whole HRDC approval thing again with my new employer. (I have been in Canada for three years now).

Thanks y´all, i am in two minds now...Some say that i should apply, some say that i should wait to get the funding first. i wonder if i should get a few loans from my family members, let it sit there for six months or so, then apply...? Any suggestions. As for arranged employment...Can anyone direct me as to some websites where i can post my resume online or something? I think my chances of getting a work permit will be better if i have arranged employment.
