| Subject: how long i can stay in Canada? |

|
I am going to quit the program I am studying in this August, and my study permit is valid till beyond 2009, can I still stay in Canada by holding a student status after I quit? I am not eligible for applying post-graduate work permit yet, if I can´t stay till my study permit expries, how long I can legally stay in Canada?

OK - if you are no longer a student, by rights, you should be informing immigration, who will then require you to leave - probably as soon as reasonably possible. That´s the "playing by the book" answer. However, if you remain until the end of your current permit who is to know that you are no longer studying? You have a permit to be here so you are technically not breaking the rules - just keep them ignorant!

I agree. Or, you can do some side courses, and find a job to support yourself. Take classes in the new field that you are interested in, so if the school that you quit tries to get you kicked out of the country by going to immigration, you will be in good hands, cuz, you can show that you´re still getting an education by taking a few courses, classes etc..

Not sure its that easy Shane. If the study permit is anything like the work permit, its pretty regulated about where you can study and what course etc. My work permit specifies who I work for, where I work and in what field. However its highly unlikely that the university would report you - who has the time - and in any case, they are unlikely to have your file number to report you anyway. It would take CIC too long to match you up and they are far too busy pushing paper around to do that.

Called cic, and got the answer that yes students can stay till study permit expires, but if they want to renew it at that time, they have to provide a good reason why they drop a school without continuing study, while they are allowed to apply other school before study permit expires. Since it´s very possible for people like me to apply another program next year, it won´t be a big problem for students now to stay here till study permit expires unless they are really killing time without doing anything meaningful things.
Any other suggestions or considerations?

I am taking online classes and would like to visit a friend and Canada for 5 to 6 months. Do I need to apply for student visa even if I´m doing online class. The online class school is located in Florida and I´m currently living in Washington. Thank you so much for any information or advice.
