Subject: Staying in Canada
I am a US citizen by birth.

I know that I can own property and rather freely travel across the border.

If I move to Canada, buy a house, business etc. without applying for citizenship or PR status how long can I remain in Canada without having to return to the US?

If I am required to return to the US, how long must I remain there?

In reading over the CIC site I find that if I enter legally and do not apply for PR and decide to many years from now I will receive credit at 50% for my time in country.

I want to do it all legally, so not interested in becoming a criminal or being forced to leave.

Thanks

Undocumented entry is good for six months but many Canadians are long term residents in Arizona and Florida. You can do the same here because IF you are not stamped in your passport there is no way of knowing when you entered. Get special medical coverage incase you need to be transported across the border in case of a medical emergency.

The 50% credit is up to one year and that is for people who have applied and been accepted for permanent residency like H&C or Refugee claimants for time already spent in Canada after being accepted in principle while being processed.

I am in a similar position as Jim. Is there someone that can give some reliable information regarding this subject.

I have looked on other boards regarding this subject and still have not found what I am looking for.

If I buy a home/business/farm and then enter Canada without going thru the PR process can I stay. I am in my late 50´s and being a realist know that I don´t have the years left to go thru a 10 year process.

Does anyone know of a short legal route for an older american that wants to live in Canada.

Perhaps those of us in similar situations can get together on the net and jointly learn from one another.
