you can leave canada the same day you land! and return in 3 years and you will still be a PR.

The week that you are in Canada, make sure you apply for the following-

1. PR Card.
2. SSN No.
3. Health Card.
4. Driv. Lic.
5. Bank Account.

You have 5 years to show you intend to make Canada your home. In these 5 years you should ideally must have stayed 3 in Canada (on and off is OK).

If doing above, how long do you have to ship your goods in goods-to-follow list submitted at landing? Can you ship your goods 3 years later (since you can remain outside that long and retain PR status)?

Actually it´s 2 years in Canada, 3 outside, not the other way around. There´s no ´ideally´ about it, you can indeed come on and out, on and off, but if you haven´t accumulated those 2 years in 5, if you try and get citizenship or renew your PR card (not sure about the latter) and they find out you haven´t met the residency requirements, you´ve lost PR.

As listed on the CIC website:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizen/becoming-howto.html

you need to live in Canada for 3 out of 4 years.

[**.203.41.37]is right, You must live in Canada for two years in every five-year period:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/skilled/after-3.html

Permanent Resident Status
Now that you are a permanent resident of Canada, you have certain rights. You also have some obligations.

You will not lose your permanent resident status unless you spend too much time living outside of Canada. You must live in Canada for two years in every five-year period.

2 years out of 5 to maintain your PR status (That is correct)

However if your intention is to apply for Canadian citizenship you must live in Canada for 3 out of 4 years.
