avoid the word ´north´ and ´west´ Vancouver.

Richmond is more reasonable than one would expect and by 2010 there will be a rapid transit line that will take you downtown in 20 minutes. I commute now and it is about 30 in non peak hours.

We measure time by bridges and tunnels around here. every bridge adds 30 minutes. We are totally controlled by water so you can´t go far without dealing with it one way or another unless you head east which is a commuting nightmare.

Abbotsford is an active community but you would not want to commute every day to Vancouver. same goes for Langley and Maple Ridge unless you like sitting in your car for 3 hours a day if you are working downtown.

Depends if you are alone, or with family?

Some areas in downtown like Davie have some limited studios for around $800.

New Westminster where we live is active and 25 mins downtown via sky train.

The rentals are cheaper here.

Surrey is lower in cost,i.e., Guilford area, but I have not sensed community there like one gets in New West.

Good luck.

You are gonna love Vancouver... we arrived here last July and we are very happy.
