Subject: Immigrant rights
  Hi all,

I´m putting the cart before the horse again here, but I would like to know in advance....

If (and when) we land in Canada, how long until we are realistically likely to get a mortgage? My wife and I are from the UK and are optimistically hoping to land in about 8 months (she is likely to be a Provincial Nominee).

If, fingers crossed, we both have solid jobs from the get-go, are we looking at 3 years to establish credit or are there specific mortgage plans available for immigrants?

And once we have bought a house - will bears come and scare our cat?!!!

Cheers!

careful. this forum does not believe we have bears in the Vancouver area. (we do but they generally hang out where the city meets the mountains so avoid North Vancouver if you are worried about your cat) Coyotes are a problem too :)

I would think that once your wife has a work contract and you bring as much of your credit history along as possible - there is nothing to stop you.

you might want to register yourself over at www.roadtocanada.com. (no yahoo or hotmail addresses allowed).

while this forum is good there are not too many of us Canadians lurking about. At RTC there is a large Canadian contingent that hangs around waiting for their loved ones and they are a wealth of domestic information.

Thanks Sharon, I´ll check that out.

While I´m still here though.... My credit history is a problem.... My UK business folded last year and left me bankrupt.... (see one of my previous, panicky threads!)

yes, now I remember. without getting into your personal details - did you have some positive credit history before things went sideways that you can show? If you are coming to the Lower Mainland, I would check Vancity Credit Union, Prospera Credit Union, or Coast Capital Savings. I know Vancity has a very large immigrant clientelle. They are far more agressive than a conventional bank and have treated me very well. As a female business woman, the banks would not give me the time of day. Vancity fell all over themselves to give me what I wanted and they will have my business forever.

Brilliant.

Thanks for that, I´ve noted it down.

Also I´ve registered on roadtocanada so maybe see you there? If not, thanks for the tip. Account not active yet but eventually I´ll be listed as Biggles.

Being nosey now, what kind of business are you in? Are you a native Canadian?

Sounds like my afternoon!

Anyway, apologies if my typing gets erratic. Been enjoying some Greek wine which is getting the better of me.

Wife´s home from work in a few minutes - she may have to take over!

the RTC webmaster needs to launch you and she is probably out at the beach for the afternoon. I have sent her a referral so she will likely activate you later tonight.

Your typing apology made me laugh. I used to chat with an Irish/Canadian fellow at the opposite end of the country. He drank Crown Royal and I would enjoy my wine while we both listened to Pink Floyd or some other such selection that we would agree upon for the evening. As the night wore on, the typing would get worse and worse and the jokes would get equally bad. I have not heard from him in a while. Your vocabulary has reminded me of how much fun we had and an email is long overdue.

my glass of wine will need to wait til later. right now a cold beer seems far more weather appropriate. It is blazing hot here today. 37C
