Subject: British citizen marrying Canadian Student
My boyfriend (British citizen born and raised) is coming to visit me here in Canada. We have been talking about getting married and him staying here with me once we do. We would like to know our visa options for him to stay and the quickest way we can get him working here. Our situation is made worse by the fact that he is 19 and I´m 25 and neither of us have any money (in fact, I am a university student and am more in debt than anything) as well as the fact that we will end up living with my parents until he can get a job and we can afford a small place of our own.

Please help =x Any information would be great.

A British Citizen doesn´t need a Visa to visit Canada. Let him come here.Get married, get a marriage certificate.
And then you can sponsor him for Permanent Residency in Canada.

Information is available at:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/sponsor/familymembers.html#spouse

Application forms are available at:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/spouse.html

He will get his permanent residency within 2 or 3 months, as he is sponsored by a Canadian citizen.
Good luck!

STOP THINK AGAIN! permanent residency in 2-3 months!!!!

Look up the processing times yourself and do not take all advice as gospel. It is 53 days for you to be approved as a sponsor from Miss. CPC see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/times/process-in.html#perm_res if you sponsor him (as if) he is in the UK. Then 3-9 months from London. SEE http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/times-int/05-fc-spouses.html

Now if you sponsor him from within Canada its 7-8 months for a stage one approval letter and probaly at least another year for him to get a PR card.

What ever you choose to do is make sure you read the last bold part of the spouse partner questionnaire and write in detail why your relationship is genuine.

Wishing you all the luck you will need it.

Roy, don´t bullshit buddy, I have seen cases where sponsorship was processed within three months. My friend has married someone from a foreign country, he came back to Canada, and within three months he brought his wife to Canada.
So....it´s possible.

I have no seen any inland going that fast and if anything, it is longer than what Roy has suggested.

Sidharth, your advice is deceptive. Inland is taking forever - to the point where people are withdrawing applications and doing an out of country application. Also, given their age, CIC will review their case very carefully.

This is nothing close to a slam dunk.

Sidharth, your example is of an out of Canada application - totally different scenario buddy. Please, you are playing with someone´s life here - be careful.

Alright. The point is you need a marriage certificate. Someone has to go out of his/her own country to get it. It´s upto them to decide who´s going where to get that precious certificate.
Good luck

How come out of the country applications are faster? And if he is denied a visa will it means he can´t reapply? In which case, how will we ever be together? How can they legally keep a married couple apart forever? =/

common-law application (in reply to: British citizen marrying Canadian Student)
I have a similar question... I´m just about to apply to sponsor my boyfriend here in Canada for the common-law partner application. we have been living in montreal together for over a month. i´ve contacted the CIC center and they told me he CAN stay here in canada while we apply under the "outside canada" category. just want to verify this with you guys.. did i get it right?
and another thing. since we´re in quebec, it seems like we don´t have to show any funds, only for me not to be on wellfare - could you confirm this too?
one last thing - we have the lease agreement to show we have been living together for over a year but i don´t know what else to get to make our "legal case" stronger. any suggestions? i have our phone bill with the joined adress, but that´s pretty much it.
as far as proving the relationship - got plenty of emails, letters, cards etc..

Do you know anything about the success rates of these applications?
i´d apreciate any advice you guys could give me on this
thanks !
