Subject: To SW or not to SW, that's the question
  All,

If you apply as SW under specific NOC category, are you then obligated to take up that profession upon immigration? Or can you immediately do something completely different that´s not even considered a desired skill, i.e., run a motel, drive a cab, buy a small business?

I´m not sure if CIC tracks these things or even has interest in what one does after immigration.

Thanks.

If what so many asians are doing after gettin in with medical/engineering and other fancy paper work is right, you can certainly do whatever you wish once you are in, including doin nuffin juss sittin around and hangin loose. If ya want to turn into a cabbie, you may need to get the skills needed, such as driving license and so forth. I suggest you haul a loada loot and hang out for a year or so and get to know your city/province before goin out there and lookin for work. I know, I know easier said than done... but it works for me fine.

Good advice, thanks RM. But the point is you CAN do something else and are not obligated to follow-thru on the SW skills path that got you there, correct?

A lot of asians who are unhappy seem to argue that they SHOULD be provided with employment in the area of expertise that got them PR in the first place. Canada, on the other hand, presupposes you will go through whatever motions needed to settle in your area of expertise. I think there are some government venues to help people get into the system. I am not too sure about the nature of these venues. Luckily, I placed myself in the right job as soon as I walked in. Or should I say, I moved to Canada AFTER finding a job in science. I signed a perenneal contract so I don´t worry much about jobs and such. Well, gotta get going here in a sec. Good luck with settlement and waht not.

Ok RM, thanks again. But I could do without the Asian stereotyping that you seem fixated on. Maybe a little less racism and a little more inclusion for all in these immigration discussions.
