Subject: Importing car while temporary
  All,

Would anyone know this? (Hope everyone´s not geting sick of my questions about detail.)

Planning on landing, giving friend´s address for PR Card mailing, and importing car at the same time. However, I´m intending to stay in Canada only a few days and returning to U.S. with the same car to dispose of residence, property, and prepare for the big and final move in a few months.

I´m worrred that I´m not taking care of something with the imported car while in the U.S. Are owners of imported cars obligated to do something within 30 days of importation - registration, license, inspection, etc.? If so, then someone landing and importing a car must then stick around in Canada to take care of all this and should not leave until completed? And how long could this take?

Maybe, in this case, is it better to import one´s car only at the time of the final move?

Thanks much.

Why not put your car in the "goods to follow" list? That´s what i plan to do later this month. There´s simply too much trouble importing the car only to take it out of the country right away.

I thought about that. But then I heard that Canadian Customs is hesitant on landing someone and not importing their car that their travelling with at the same time.

Maybe I´m wrong. If I am then yes, best to simply put one´s car on "Goods to Follow" list, and still land anyway. Everyone agree on this approach?

This may be off base, Richard, but although you´re landing it´s not as though you´re really staying there any length of time, it´s more like a "visit." So, as with a visit, you´re just bringing in a vehicle as transportation back and forth, it could as just have been a rented or borrowed auto. Also, so many immigrants land and then go back in a too short time to fill out all the paperwork; one might even acquire another car by the time one stays for good. But "Goods to Follow" list sounds good for the car in any case. Good luck. Should be any day that you hear the exciting news.

Yes, I think that´s right Bob, thanks. Sounds like Canadian Customs won´t have a problem putting one´s care on Goods to Follow. I know you´re doing what we will be doing, going up there now (to land I believe) and later completing the big and final move. Sounds like you´re not taking your personal car on this first trip.

In any event, I´m very pleased that you´re about complete in the process. And yes, I should be right behind you with some good news as well.

Thanks, Richard. Come to think of it I am driving my own car to Windsor, but never actually thought of doing the paper work since it´s going to be a "quickie" back and forth. There´s also a good chance we will get rid of both "clinkers" because of their advanced age and fly out to our ultimate destination, which is a considerable distance from our residence. I´m waiting to hear about your exciting news.
