Subject: Finding Employment Without A Work permit
  Hi Everyone,

I have lived and worked in Toronto for 15 months on a work permit and am applying for permanent residency. Unfortunately, my current company cannot offer me a permanent job when the current permit expires. I need a further 5 points in order to qualify for permanent residency. I have 16 years experience in a management/supervisory role in administration. Is there anyone that will take on an employee that does not have a work permit. With their sponsorship, I would have the required points. I have sold my house in the UK and love Canada, and never want to go back. Are there agencies or organisations that deal with this sort of thing?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Steve

Sorry to intrude on your serious question. But in planning my leaving the U.S., Canada and the UK were practically equal in choice. I´m just wondering what the reasons are for strong determination to leave UK for Canada. In my mind, both have good social systems, national health care, availability of jobs, low crime, good public transport, history, and beautiful rural areas.

Canada > UK (in reply to: Finding Employment Without A Work permit)
I lived in the UK for over 40 years and slowly watched it deteriorate. Whatever the crime figures say, my experience was that it is much higher in the UK than in Canada. Not only that, it starts at a much younger age. Children of 8 or so quite happily break windows or scratch car paintwork for no apparent reason. There just isn´t any of that mentality in Canada from what I have seen. The people here are also much more open and friendly. The cost of living is about two-thirds of that in the UK. It´s an easy choice for me. I just hope that I have that choice.

Makes sense based on your first hand experiences, which I haven´t had. Thanks for your observations. Looks like we´re on the right path with Canada, then.

An extra 5 points should somehow be possible. As suggestion, if your spouse is degreed that adds 5 points. Also can you not negotiate with your current company for extension so you can qualify for needed points for application?

I´ll get out of the way and let others who may know more about your question reply.

I am single and have explored extensions with my current company. Thanks for the suggestions though.

I guess it depends on your field, but without meaning to be rude, if you don´t have something a Canadian doesn´t already have, you won´t find anyone to sponsor you. I can understand you not wanting to go back to the UK, though - I am from there and wouldn´t go back if you paid me! Far too materialistic a culture, terrible public transport, a govt. that wants ID card to ´stop illegal immigration´ which they could and should have prevented earlier, yob culture and binge drinking, 60 million people on a tiny island... no thanks!

I find that hard to believe. Altho haven´t lived there, I´ve been to the UK many times. Public transport was outstanding, altho expensive. You could practicaly go anywhere via bus or rail efficently and quickly (express intercity trains). Here in the U.S., without a car forget it.

Materialistic culture - there is none more than the American. People here spend every free minute at the "mall" and conversation is always about what "I got". Television here is an endless series of commercials. When I was in the UK, BBC was intersting, educational, and history was everywhere.

As I recall, Scotland is beatiful, quite desolate and remote in most parts, and was not in the least bit overcrowded.

ID cards are a necessity everywhere these days. The British govt is just doing what makes sense in the climate of world terrorism.

Richard - a world of difference between visiting a place and living in it (and even more, being born and raised there). If you have been to Europe or main cities in Canada you will know that the public transport there is far more efficient and cost effective than the UK. You would perhaps also see that the ´educational´ BBC can be seen as preaching, condescending and tailored to the middle to low educated. The top two programmes on are both soap operas about miserable lives in London and Manchester! ID cards are arguably not a necessity - the UK govt. want to make it illegal not to have one, but you don´t hve to carry it around with you? I just read how 0.5 billion pounds has been spent on biometric passports and a German hacker has just found how to clone info. The UK govt. acts before it thinks and look how much money is wasted as a result. Vive le Canada!

Ok, thanks for the insight. You´re correct in that living in a country is not the same as visiting. Canada appears then to be the right choice.
