and it was no. Despite having a degree and a post-grad qualification,
she must obtain more training. No information has been provided about
what she needs to complete - the implication is a full degree course.

I have seen mention of bridging programs and 1 year qualification
courses - can anyone give us some advice on what my wife´s options are,
as the OCT have been nothing but rude, unhelpful and patronising.

Any advice would be most welcome.

well ya. every province requires a teacher to be certified. Standards of teacher training around the world are not very consistent and therefore those are the rules. You can´t eve move provinces as a Canadian educated teacher without certification from the College.

I am not sure why this person is upset. They should have researched what she would need to do before they even landed - it is no buried secret. I highly doubt that it took 5 years to get an answer from the College.

She can take a 2 year program if she has a BA or a 1 year with a Masters and she is good to go.

In that time she would have re-qualified herself if she went to school in Ont!

I bet it would be hard for her to even get a teacher-assistant or aide position for minimum wage!

they don´t pay teaching assistants minimum wage, however they must be properly trained to Canadian standards. Last I heard teachers aids were earning $17 an hour and they have union and pension benefits.

our teacher friend has 2 problems. Her licensing and the job market for teachers- both are non-immigration issues.

In a country with declining birthrates, teaching is not a profession with shortages. In some provinces, highly skilled Canadian teachers spend several years on substitute lists until they can obtain permanent position. It often depends on their area of major such as english or history. If they have a major in math- no problem!

For the Canadian trained teacher, they can´t even blame immigration. They can only blame poor investigating skills when planning a career.

some more.

if our friend wanted to teach, there are several alternatives to the licensing requirements. She could have taught in the local community college without a provincial license. She could have also applied to teach at the countless private schools who´s teaching staff do not fall under the jurisdiction of the College of teachers. She could have also become a tutor which would have had her working almost right away while she sorted out her qualifications.

I am not an employment counsellor but I know my suggestions are about 2 phone calls away for anyone that would have the motivation to look.

Doubtful that a newbie would be easily hired to teach in any community college or university.

It sounds easier than it is.

Sorry Sharon, nice try. You assume too much good faith and unbiased opinions, on the part of Canadian employers towards new permanent residents.

$17/hour....hmm....that part sounds decent...where did you get that figure? That´s a fair wage to start out as, if you are desperate and you don´t have a whole family to feed.

My sister in law is a TA. It is double minimum wage. It is about $35K a year plus full medical and pension. Can you support a family of 4 on it - not very easily but nobody ever suggested supporting a family on one income was easy!

So tell us .66.5.190 are you already in Canada? for how long? where did you land? what is your story - instead of printing newspaper articles - why not tell us YOUR story so we can perhaps give you some help!
