if you are working in North Vancouver - only consider living in North Vancouver. Rents are fair, and you have everything you need there. The rest of the city is connected by bridges and long commutes.

Sounds pretty sketchy. Must not be that stable a form of employment if you can only afford to stay in a motel or youth hostel.

Vancouver will eat you up and spit you out. Be careful.

Of course, if all else fails, you can always become an addict and live on East Hastings street, and get free food at the giveaway centers.

Now that´s a pretty crappy life, but many an aspiring want-to-be future Canadian has wound up there!

where to stay (in reply to: vancouver, where to start?)
Hi

Glad to hear you are coming!

If you get one of the local independent newspapers, you will see ads for "rooms to rent", usually $300- or so mnth.

I know that New Westminster has its share of room rentals. I would think the motels are sort of expensive.

Look on the web for The Cambie Hostel. If you do not mind sharing a bathroom, that is an excellent place to stay and is in the middle of everything downtown. Av $18-34 per night.

Stay away from the single occupancy rooms and hotels on the Eastside (except the Cambie).... they are filled with druggies and others who will prey upon you.

Food here is pretty cheap and the city is walkable..

Good luck/.
