  Let me be clear...

Once you get your permanent visa - how long do you have to stay in Canada at stretch w/o losing it? I have heard in 5 years you need to stay for a period of 2; not can it be such that you don´t come for next 3 and then just stay at stretch for 2.

Please clarify the real deal as I need to plan accordingly.

I am confused (in reply to: OK what is the real deal??)
Your question is very confusing. Help me understand why you want to be in Canada as little as possible to retain your residence status. Why do you immigrate in the first place?

Once you have your PR, you must be in Canada for a total of two of the five years. After five years, you must show that you have been a resident in Canada for two years in order to renew that PR status. This is all on the CIC website.

In my case, for example, I hope to get a landing date, enter Canada from USA (I´m American), then return. I have a regulated job with credentials that need to be transfered to the appropriate Canadian Government organization. I can´t start that process until I have the PR status. After the transfer of credentials process is over, I will move North. I will have spent the latter part of the five year period already gainfully employed with a residence.

Anybody can correct me if I am misled.

makes sense (in reply to: OK what is the real deal??)
Greg;
that is the very first time this issue of maintaining status while being out of the country makes sense. Thank you.

The Law says that you can maintain PR if you stay in Canada for 2 years out of a total 5 years. But the law has also given power to the immigration official at the port of entry to refuse entry to a PR if s/he feels that the PR does not intend to stay in Canada permanently.

It is the responsibility of PR to prove sufficient ties to Canada or at least a sincere effort to establish himself/herself in Canada.
