Subject: points system- discriminatory or just?
  Hi,
I am working on a paper about Immigration policies in Canada vs.immigration regulations in Europe focusing on the points system particularly.
Will be most glad if you post your comments about what you think about this selection process?
Is it a discriminatory way of "mark"ing people on some basic criterias or a logical/practical way of choosing those ones who possess certain traits?
Thanks for your possinle help,

Pinar

my humble opinion (in reply to: points system- discriminatory or just?)
I think points help remove many opportunities for ´influence´ or dispute. It is all pretty clear cut. The onus is on the applicant to verify their qualification.

I am not sure the point system is giving enough weight to those who possess skills such as construction or welding etc. We admit people based on their education and then we do not recognize the credentials once they arrive. That issue causes me concerns.

I do not know the solution, is how immigration has become economically prohibitive to those people living in 3rd world economies. The Canadian opportunity would create such a huge difference in their lives but the costs to apply are almost insurmountable. The immigration legacy of 100 years ago has vanished.

The last thing is how to deal with the backlog. There is obviously more applications annually than Canada can absorb. What to do with the surplus applications. Right now they just wait in line. Do we consider a lottery system of x number of approved applicants and them tell everyone else to start again? At least they would have an answer. Having people to wait 4 years is not ethical.

you asked!!!

It is not discriminatory but a logical way of filtering people who wants to enter the country with a valid cause.

To an extent as Sharon mentions; the U.S. policy might be better. People who have proven a tie with local society and contribution with just cause are offered permanent residence.

I really don´t see the European Residency program as an open and fair. Their´s is only a limited program which is not attracting professionals. Which professional in their right mind will be willing to live in most European countries like Germany only for specific no of years and them return back to your country? Also your children don´t get citizenship if they are born in Germany. I´m not sure on case by case specific country.
