Subject: Landing - goods to follow and personal allowance
  Hi All,

Planning to land tomorrow. We´ve been living in Canada on a work permit for two years already (and loving it). We´re just having a labour day weekend in the US and will head back with our new visas tomorrow.

How does it work for the goods to follow and personal allowance. I´m not sure if we will be allowed to submit a Form B4 for goods to follow as we probably should have done this when we came with our work permits two years ago (but we didn´t know about this). Will we be allowed the personal allowance, i.e. $200 per person for more than 48 hours away ?

Appreciate any advice from the experts.

I know about the B4 goods list, but I never heard of the "personal allowance". There is no mention of "personal allowance" in the CIC newcomers guide for immigrants preparing to move to Canada.

As far as I know, immigrants can bring as much money as they want and declare - there is no "allowance". So what is this all about?

To address your question, my impression is that all immgrants who are "landing" are allowed to import goods as personal belongings without subject to import tax. This I believe applies whether you already reside in Canada or outside. Maybe others can confirm this or not.

If you are a citizen, permanent or temporary resident, you get a duty free allowance which varies depending on how long you spend outside Canada when you go on a trip. This is the personal allowance

I see. Personal allowance applies to residents then, not new immigrants.
