Subject: Medicare + Pregnancy
We are planning to move to Toronto soon and I see from the websites that Ontario health card has a 90 days waiting period. I am currently pregnant.

1. So do I have to pay for the doctor and hosptal expenses during the first 90 days?
2. Is there any private insurance options which I can avail? If so, will they cover my pregnancy, since I am already pregnant.
3. What if I have a premie?
4. Worst case, if I have to pay for everything, how much will the delivery cost in Canada? I know in US I may end up with a $20K bill.

Many thanks,

$2,000.00 til $3,000.00 but the second the baby is born the baby is covered. This is from the beginning to the end. All provincial plans require a three month process of residency.

Roy,

Respectfully adding point of clarification.

This is true for Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and BC. But the 3-month rule varies by province. Except for New Brunswick, all the Maritime provinces provide immediate health coverage for permanent residents upon landing. They just need their counterfoil visa in the foreign passport and COPR to register with that province´s health system.

In Toronto, yes.

2. Is there any private insurance options which I can avail? If so, will they cover my pregnancy, since I am already pregnant.

There is probably some available but it will be expensive as you havea pre-existing condition. Google around or call local insurance people you know.

3. What if I have a premie?

You´d better have a lot of money!

4. Worst case, if I have to pay for everything, how much will the delivery cost in Canada? I know in US I may end up with a $20K bill.

I´ve heard $7k, but obviously it depends how well things go, how long you´re in hospital and where you are. You might want to contact hospitals in Toronto to ask, just to be sure.

Maybe you could move after you give birth, and sponsor your baby? It would be an awful lot cheaper...
