Subject: Exchanging NJ driver's license for Ontario License
Has anybody recently changed their NJ driver´s license to Ontario license. I started living in Toronto from the 30th of August but I haven´t gotten my car as yet (Don´t have a parking spot) but I understand we only have 60 days to exchange the license. I have a NJ license since July 2000 but my current license was issued in May 2005, it therefore does not have more than 14 months on it. They said I need a letter of experience from NJ MVC. I tried calling NJ MVC and they said they will only mail a letter of clearance to my NJ address. Is there anything I can do to get a Ontario license quickly. If they ask me to give a road test I don´t have a car to give the test on.

Please share your experience on exchanging a NJ license for a Ontario license.

Thanks!

SkS,
I landed on june 12 from Michigan. Had to wait for awhile until I got my driver license exchange for an Ontario one.
What I did was that I brough my driving record with me when I landed. But unfortunatly they are not accepting this anymore in Ontario. What they need now is your driving experience, how many years you had a USA driver license. I call to the ph number they gave me and explained what I needed. To be honest, they,re kind of lost in this matter, they keep assuring you that what you need is your driving record. Well, at the end I asked them
for the web site where I could download the form for the driving record, filled it out again and attached a letter explaining what I needed along with the paper the the MOT gave me, plus a check of $8 dollar.
I had not problem with them mailing it to Canada (home), but you have to take it UNOPEN to the MOT office to be valid. So, if they don´t want to mail it to an address in Canada, give then an address in NJ and make sure somebody can mail it to you unopen.
If you have a fax number I can fax you what Michigan sent me and maybe you can attached this too as an example.

I hope this help.

Thank you very much for you answer cabuce. Unfortunately I don´t have a fax no. What paper did MOT give you and whose website did you go to Canadian MOT or Michigan motor vehicle office. I am just a little bit confused.

When I went the first time to the MOT office in Windsor, Ontario for the exchange, they explained to me what I needed for the exchange to take place, and at the same time they gave me a paper stating the same and the michigan´s phone number that I should call. When I called to this number, the person that I talked to gave me a web site where I could go to download the form that I needed to apply for my driving record.
Go back to the MOT office and ask them for the NJ phone number you should call and beside to give you the paper with all the requirements for the exchange (to attach it
to the letter). Highlight what apply to you to easy the proccess to the person at the Motor Vehicle in NJ and things move faster.

Good Luck.

NJ to Ontario Driver's License (in reply to: Exchanging NJ driver's license for Ontario License)
Does this mean that once you get your Ontario´s Driver´s License, the NJ Driver´s License becomes invalid?

Thanks,
Jack
