Subject: Settle near Sydney Nova Scotia
  Hello,
my wife and me will land in Canada next year. At first we want establish a small business and settle near Sydney N.S. Cape Breton.
I browsed the internet about Sydney. Accidentally I found some sites
by wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney and a link to the Sierra Club of Canada.
sierraclub.ca/national/sydney-tar-ponds/
We got shocked about the contaminated environment.
Are all this messages true ? I can`t belive it? Can anybody
suggest me a place to settle with my family ?

Thanks in Advance. ;-)

It is a contaminated area that finally now is being cleaned up apparently.

Nova Scotia is a beautiful province and if you go to their PNP site you can watch videos of the province and make your own informed decision by viewing the videos.

I suppose your best bet would be to stay away from that area. I read some of the temporal studies of cancer incidence in that area and should say any concerned person should keep away from there. The people of Sydney are pretty much stuck there for various reasons. A new immigrant, however, has the advantage of deciding not to move into that area. There are many other very pleasant areas and towns in New Scotland. Maybe you should explore those instead. Good luck.

Hi Stefan: I´m not sure where you are coming from or why you´ve decided on Sydney, but yes, I would also suggest doing quite a bit more research on that particular area. Nova Scotia is stunningly beautiful and the people are simply wonderful; however, the economy is rather...well...slow, and jobs scarce, especially on Cape Breton. Sydney is the hub of Cape Breton, but it is still quite a small town and without much going on economically. I´m not sure what sort of business you wish to open there; it is very isolated from essentially everywhere and anywhere else (which can be great, or not, depending on your situation). I am totally not trying to be discouraging; I just hope that you do your research thoroughly and perhaps visit the area if you have not done so already before landing so you can have the best possible experience.

It is true that Sydney has some major contamination due to its mining history (basically it is a mining town with little mining anymore), and while it is being addressed, I´m not sure that progress is being made quickly. The Tar Ponds is what you have to be most concerned with, but certainly there are areas around that are less bad than others.

If you have your heart set on Nova Scotia, you might consider Halifax, at least to get yourself started. The economy there isn´t great either, compared to other Canadian cities, but it´s far more vibrant than that of Sydney´s.

Best of luck to you!

I would take a trip to Nova Scotia before you get your PR and see what the province is like - that is what my wife and I did. It is really hard to get an idea of the area from the internet. It may save you a lot of money if it does not meet your expectations. Personally, my wife and I love NS and are planning on going there.

...of course I´m not a greenhorn. We spent every year many weeks on holiday in Canada since 1990. and for the past 4 years in Nov.Sco. I think nobody wants to tell about bad things over his homeland. And that`s why I visited the internet to get more detailed information
