Subject: OHIP
I was wondering if someone will be eligible for OHIP (Ontario health insurance plan) if the PR application is process (of course you have to be physically present in Ontario). The rule says that once you satisfies the medical, you will be eligible. However, when I contacted the Toronto downtown OHIP Office, they are very stubborn and mention that the waiting will begin once you land. I was wondering why they are refusing to acknowledge something which is explicitly written. How do I go about it? Please share ur experience.

You can´t land until the PR process is completed because you need to get your visa first. Then after landing with visa and registering with OHIP, you must wait 3 months before eligible for health insurance.

Thanks Richard, I am aware of that. But we were in Canada long before our PR process completed (we were in work permit). Our medical was finalized on may 19 and we landed on Aug. So we think we should be eligible for OHIP three months from may 19. But the folks at OHIP are very stubborn. Ironicaslly, they do not have any satisfactory explanation when I sjow them the OHIP eligibility rule.

Sorry incanada, I misunderstood. I don´t see how you could expect the 3 month health insurance wait to begin from medical finalization. All of us immigrating from outside must wait for medical completion, visa, then land. Once landing occurs, that also is not enough. We must then register with OHIP and the 3 month wait then begins from that date. I´m not sure why you´d think the 3 month wait would begin from medical finalization

Maybe others on this board can also give their opinion.

OHIP plan starts three months after you come to Canada. It is a waiting period. So three months start from the day you enter canada and not from when you go to OHIP office.

Please go to the following website, as the information that the persons above have provided is not correct.
http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/program/ohip/ohipfaq_dt.html#Q1

It states that you would be eligible for OHIP if you meet the following criteria (I am highlighing the ones that apply to you):
(1) you have submitted an Application for Permanent Residence or an Application for Landing and have been confirmed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada as having satisfied the medical requirements for landing OR
(2) you are a foreign worker who holds a valid work permit or employment authorization which names a Canadian employer situated in Ontario and your prospective occupation and is valid for at least six months

AND you make your permanent and principal home in Ontario
AND you are in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date you establish residency in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residency)
AND you are in Ontario for at least 153 days in any 12-month period

You need to get a letter from CIC stating that you have passed the medical, if you are using the first criteria above. However, once you have a work permit for more than 6 months, and have been in Ontario for more than 183 days, you should qualify. Just go to one of the OHIP offices, with your work permit, and ID, and print them the page that I have indicated above (showing the criteria for qualification for OHIP), and you should not have a problem.

I hope this helps!!!

Thanks Jay. Can you please elaborate on the following.

I am proposing the OHIP eligibility based on the following rule, as you have written above-

(1) you have submitted an Application for Permanent Residence or an Application for Landing and have been confirmed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada as having satisfied the medical requirements for landing

When we came to Canada (PR was in process, applied in Buffalo), I had a work permit with the employers´s name. So I became eligible for OHIP after three months. She also had a work permit but it was an open one (no employer´s name). Hence, she was not eligible for OHIP. Then our medical was finalized (may 19). So My point is, why can they not sart counting three months from that day on? Especially since We have been living here in Ontario .

Thanks again for inputs.

When you say your medical was finalized, did you get a letter from CIC saying that you passed the medical. You need to get that first. That is the only proof that you can show at the OHIP office. The letter should state the effective date on which you passed the medical. That is the date from which you start counting the three months, if you are using criteria 1) above.

waiting time frame (in reply to: OHIP)
Hi,
I am a temporary worker under the graduate worker permit (3yrs). I am living in Ontario but came from Quebec in June 2001. I just realized on Friday that I was eligible to getting OHIP as per the new law. So, I went today to OHIP office in my city to get myself setup. They told me about a 3mths waiting time. But my question is that my initial arrival to Montreal,Canada was in Aug 1996; my last entry being in Aug 2006? The website says that OHIP plan starts three months after you come to Canada and so, this is the waiting period.
Now, I´ve applied for PR status in early 2008 but this is still pending.
Should I still be waiting 3 months and should the waiting period be from the day we enter the country or not?
I can´t await longer for these 3 months as I´m positive Hep B and thus require health care like blood tests, yet I don´t believe that the new law would have me wait, when others and myself be at risk if I don´t go thru testings. And believe me 3 months is a long time to get my benefit active.

medical coverage for temporary worker (in reply to: OHIP)
If you have applied for PR in 2008, you should be able to get medical coverage once you received first stage approval (conditional approval). Your file may take longer to review due to your HEP B+ status. If you are deemed medically inadmissible (due to your medical condition being a stress to Canada´s healthcare system), your PR application may be refused. Although you may be eligible for interim healthcare based on your work status ... varies province to province.

I honestly don´t think my health issue be a problem to getting PR status cz if it was the case, they won´t have let me come in the first time. And, I spoke with one guy from the consulate at Detroit who came over to my university and he told me his wife is Hep B+ too and, still got PR status.

This being said, my question is more about the waiting time for OHIP. I am eligible as grad worker, but they told me I´m supposed to wait 3 mths till the benefit coverage takes motion. Since April 1, 2009 all Graduate Worker and Open Work Permit holder are eligible for OHIP if they meet certain criteria and I met them all.

But, they told about a 3 month waiting timeframe before I can start using my coverage.
Should I still be waiting 3 months from the date I applied as they said or should the waiting period be from the day we enter the country?
